Home gym is expensive as hell to do properly though, the weights all add up and your gains starting out are fast. From experience the IRS cares about (relatively) poor people more than wealthy people. Poor people are easy to audit.

You get taxed on capital gains. As in if you bought a stock for $2000 and sold it at $2500 you get taxed for the $500 you gain.

The amount you get taxed depends on your tax bracket and how long you held the stock. If you're a poorfag and hold onto a stock for a year before selling it you'll be taxed 0%. Short term capital tax is a lot higher and there are no 0% bracket. Note this is on individual stock itself.

If you sell NIO and gain $500 but lost $500 on your GME sale. You don't have a capital gain of $0. You have a capital gain of $500 and a capital loss of $500. You can claim the deduction of your losses up to a certain amount depending on your filing. If you lost more than the max deduction you can carry over your deduction to next year.

You can claim capital losses even if your gain is significantly higher, they're separate. You can even get into situation such as making a capital gain of $10,000 but you held all of them for a year so you're taxed 0%. However you've also lost $1,000 in other stocks which you can put as a deductible.

One final note is wash sales, based on the last couple months in this thread everyone has fucked up over and over. You cannot claim any losses on any stock you sold for a loss, if you buy that same stock again within 30 days.

Alternatively just don't file taxes, statistically you won't be audited. The sweet spot to be audited is like 50k-150k.
