Current reactors need fuel. The supply has collapsed in the decade since Fukushima which was one hell of a bear market. These reactors cannot accept substitutes. And its been like this for years. That isn't the problem. 233Pa is actually very dangerous to work with and is the intermediate step to the actual nuclear fuel product of thorium reactors 233U. You basically produce a lot of it, then filter out the 233 when the 233Pa decays. The filter process is also very complicated. The problem is it has a half life of weeks and is incredibly dangerous in the event of a leak or maintenance.
Thorium reactors, like most fusion reactor designs, are not limited by the science but by engineering limits of current technology.
