i see people on the telegram saying they think pub adverts would make a larger difference than self serve - i don't understand why they would think so.

Publisher ads are just a slight variation of the already popular display ad. Its big because its an ad type advertisers are familiar with, theres less fraud, less middlemen taking their cut, and it gets past adblockers and gives webmasters who were against brave incentive to use it over google display even though they can use both. It will hopefully be an option for people who dont like notification ads to opt into also. Self serve, publisher ads, and the sku are all pretty big features that scale BAT to a new level. They might do something for price, but longterm its absolutely huge.
