Fractional reserve banking. There was gold coins circulating but there was also a large amount of gold certificates circulating as well. Obviously each certificate wasn’t 1:1 backed by gold, so the usurious interest to be paid wasn’t always entirely in gold

I agree but also disagree a little. Economic growth is boosted in the current debt-based system, at the cost of currency devaluation and wealth consolidation. It's all a vehicle for consumerism. If we had free markets, asset prices would stay relatively still for the most part and economic growth would be slow. But economic growth by itself isn't necessarily good. We don't need most of the things we produce, and the system has to produce things that break after a few years to keep spending flowing.
