I feel like the game theory here, accepting the premise that the US govt tries to force crypto into the traditional banking system, is this:

>holders move crypto around to hide from taxes
>parallel banking system forced into existence
>merchants begin transacting in crypto entirely on the blockchain, cryptocurrencies gain independence

Obviously, in this course of events, the vast majority of shitcoins lose their value and don't become preferred payment methods, but some would emerge as winners and standards. This is NOT what the feds want. As long as people feel that they need to have their wallet convertible to USD, that parallel system does not need to emerge. As soon as having the ability to cash out becomes a liability, the blockchain earns its place as it's own system.

Obviously, the win/win for the govt would be to crash the value of cryptos and make alternative payments infeasible, then impose tax burdens on whatever is left.
