This year I was taking a walk with my parents. I'm the broke millennial who moved back in, yes. Mostly because I'm a starving artist and there are only rich artists and starving artists, nothing else. One day I'd like to be a rich artist but that's neither here nor there.

Down the street from us is a house that's been owned by the same family for some time. The dad, a coach/counselor at the high school, split to go hook up with an old flame way back. The mom was left with two kids and just the house. She had no real professional education, no trade, no easily monetized skills, nothing and was getting by on shitty part time work. Presently her daughter, who is now a single mom of two, lives in that house with the beta orbiter that she latched onto after her sperm donor walked. They don't make a lot of money.

The mom is trying to sell that house, and as we walked by she saw us and came over. She told us about working part time at various places, and name dropped "preaching" at her church every other week. Of course that means she was a youth pastor, which meant basically getting a charity job where they threw her a few bucks to baby sit kids with bible stories every other week. She moaned about her kids being back at home and totally ignored me as she basically gave my parents a little nudge like they were supposed to commiserate with her about my generation being broke and moving back. She ignored the fact that they bought a house and lived off of her husband's income when literally any job would allow them to do that. She ignored that she was obviously desperate to unload the house out from under her daughter. The only thing this woman gave a fuck about was trying to establish that she had some kind of social status in the eyes of my parents. She had slammed the door hard on any glimmer of self awareness.

I'm not telling you to be an asshole. I'm telling you that the other fish in the water wouldn't hesitate eat you alive and to keep that in mind.
