Right now it's basically proof of stake Bitcoin, using a modified and improved version of UTxO. Just faster and cheaper, but still with 50% byzantine resistance like BTC.

In the future it (read Soon™), it will be used in governance, native asset rewards and smart contracts.

Imagine if just by holding ETH, you would get any compatible token on Ethereum in rewards. Tokens on Ethereum would also pay their own fees, no need to use ETH to send or engage with smart contracts. This will happen on Cardano. ADA holders are rewarded in native token transaction fees, just by staking ADA.

Ethereum is flawed and was built incorrectly and cannot be the "world super computer" as It's throughput and scalability is too low even with 2.0 implementations, Ethereum's is coded in solidity and it is not suitable for building major decentralised finance applications on top of it as it is extremely susceptible to exploits and liquidity loopholes. Cardano is coded in Haskell which most Banks already use to build their banking applications on top of and it's code is constructed using peer reviewed research and written to the same strict extremely high standards that Nasa and Space X implement when launching space shuttles.
