Many moons ago in 2018 I was traveling through south east asia, after an exhausting 14 day diving expedition in Koh Tao off the coast of Thailand, I decided to take a much needed break in Bali. You could see his thumb flick down in the same gesture every few seconds, as if he were refreshing some kind of page or application. There were several bottles of merlot on the table and a half-finished charcuterie board that looked more like a dogs breakfast than a respectable dish.
Almost lost in thought as I took in the scene, I didn’t quite understand the words he uttered next.
