Welcome to XMR General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading privacy-coin!
Because Monero is secure, low-fee, and borderless, people can easily send money despite corrupt and broken governments or banks. This provides economic empowerment of individuals in oppressive countries or depressed economies.
Private financial history protects consumers and companies from price manipulation, supply chain exploitation, economic discrimination, or the like. Monero is the only cryptocurrency that has the features to serve as completely fungible, decentralized, electronic cash.
If you're new, feel free to ask any questions you like and a Monero Chad will be with you shortly.

Will XMR ever become PoS like ETH2 is trying to do? Wouldn't that make xmr even MORE based and MORE decentralized since whales and pools aren't controlling a fat chunk of all the blockchain mining?

POW is tried and true. It's basic capitalism, as you need to buy a rig and pay for electricity to mine. And because of asic resistance, anybody can mine. POS is unproven and from what I've seen, is only used to entice people to buy more of that crypto so they can stake and get passive income.
Mining pools aren't necessarily a bad thing. And whales have no influence on mining, however whales would have an influence in a POS system, which is an argument against having POS.

My worry with PoW is that it's a massive waste of energy just to keep a tally of everyone's wallets and transactions. The unending arms race to mine the most is only going to raise the electrical waste in the long run when algorithms keep getting more difficult. Is this sustainable for the far future?

i forget the numbers but i think something like 70% of bitcoin PoW mining is from renewable energy
i get where you're coming from but i don't think it's anywhere bad for XMR, mostly since it's CPU based instead of ASIC (which uses a lot more power and puts out a lot more heat)
that and i wouldn't say it's a "waste' when it keeps the chain intact

How does it keep the chain 'intact' when you barely get fuckall scraps for mining xmr. There's no financial incentive to help support the network when it's demanding altruism. Sure you can mine with your pc cpu during your down time but that becomes a pain in the ass switching it off and on again. Having a dedicated rig to cpu mine more often than not yields pitiful to negative yields after electrical costs.

profit is profit
you're not going to make millions mining but it's a steady stream of income
funny enough a decent amount of xmr mining comes from botnets which is both shitty and funny at the same time
>>24101276
yeah they update constantly since some smart fucks find ways to mine via GPU which blows the fuck out of CPU

>> No.24101335

>>24101194
>There's no financial incentive to help support the network when it's demanding altruism.
that's just simply not true. There is absolutely a financial incentive. That's why monero has a massive mining network.
>Having a dedicated rig to cpu mine more often than not yields pitiful to negative yields after electrical costs.
Again, not true. If you invest in a good cpu and you calculate electricity costs, usually you will be making a profit sooner than later, especially with how Monero increases in value over time. You won't be making a profit within a few weeks, but any miner will tell you that you need to plan for the long term.

same for GPU's. usually the most damage to a GPU is during the process of heating up and cooling down rapidly and repeatedly from cycling on and off from something like crypto mining

There's a sorta-popular theory that the price is being manipulated
>A fund but most likely Binance internal desk sells X amount of borrowed monero. This happend at both peaks. At a low enough price they need to rebuy what they sold off. So they stack the sell side to double the ratio of the bid side. This has happened nearly everytime at bottoms on the ratio this year. This is to discourage noobs from buying while they can rebuy what they sold off.
