I’m 26 and have an intense fear of driving. I got my license when I was 18 but I’ve literally driven maybe two or three times since then. I’ve never driven alone. I actually tried to overcome this about four years ago and paid for a one-time driver’s ed refresher course. I haven’t gotten behind the wheel since then.

For instance, at the age of 24 most boomers had already gotten their first house and were on the way to marriage. Those averages have obviously moved up. I was a nerdy, weird kid with zero friends. I would literally spend my breaktime walking alone in a circuit around the building until I could go back to class.
When social media first got big (MySpace where I lived) I jumped into it in a big way. Within a year suddenly I was the most popular guy at school, a must have at any party of any significance, had my pick of girls, etc. Meanwhile the football team captain found himself relegated to a kind of B tier social status. It was an insane time, everything was turned upside down like you said. The people who were doing well with the status quo and didn't stay on top fell behind, while people like me who caught onto it fast found their social status skyrocketed.
I think most older millennials and Gen X who complain about use of social media don't realise the power of it. Within my school lifetime it completely took over defining people's social ranking and I can only imagine it's gotten worse. You are constantly judged hour by hour, your position is constantly in flux, you are never secure, you can never rest.
