If you wanna play it safe, I'd say real estate. If you want it to be truly passive then you'd hire a real estate manager - to manage your rentals.

Rule of thumb is to yield at least 8% per rental.
If you have good credit you could use the banks money, with $2m you could get a loan of $10m. The question becomes what will you do with the $10m? real estate.
