Makes the time go faster. You can make it a game like speedrunning. Becoming an expert at anything, even simple tasks, is rewarding. Makes the time spent feel valuable rather than a waste. If I don't want to be the best why am I doing it in the first place. I'm not a woman or a depressed person. I will not do something half arsed.

I used to. Came in to work at 8:55 and worked until the 9:00am punch-in. I kept working until lunch, which I only took 30 mins, and kept working after.

I did this for about a week and then something strange happened. I finished working. I had done all the backlogged work, my work and all the work that was due fpr the next few weeks. That started a trend where I came in to work and finished all my duties at 9:30. Then I had to spend the rest of the day looking busy, which is a lot harder than it seems.

I spent an entire day listening to every single Kanye West album and typing up a little review of each just to look busy. Graduation won out by a tiny bit.

Lesson: Office work is horseshit. If you actually work like you're supposed to you'll find that you have 30 minutes worth of work each day. No one ever works in an office. This is why nothing ever gets done.

there's value in being able to whole-heartedly devote oneself to one's work even if it's some shitty burger-flipper type job. i'm not saying to do that forever or to kill yourself for mr. shekelberg's benefit, but to learn how to be fully devoted to the moment even when things are shitty is a very valuable skill. there are dividend-paying insights there.

There's catch trays under the zzaa's topping assembly line where minimum waged workers are then instructed to extract each topping and repatriate each food item with their respected topping of customer choice. >The higher ups pressure the fuck out of employees to make shit quick, pretty much every chain prioritizes speed over quality.
I can confirm this. It's true even in smaller places too. They somehow don't care about how it's done, they just want it done fast. i.e.: we had to crush boxes in the trash area, otherwise our recycling dumpster would start to overflow and we'd have boxes all over the trash area. I was the only one that actually crushed boxes, and sometimes even picked up the slack from others not crushing their boxes. Then, I would sometimes get (minor) flack from higher-ups or other cashiers that I take too long to do trash. "So-and-so does it in 10 minutes, and hey, I mean she comes back pretty fast and is ready to work again up front"
But no, fool, she doesn't do the job correctly and is screwing ME over, as well as the intended order of everything.
I don't miss that place. Word from my ex-coworkers is it's only gotten worse as there are too many new employees compared to the good veterans that actually know how to do everything.

I realized early on that paying by the hour can't be the best system. There's no incentive to work harder than the absolute bare minimum. It's kind of like communism but instead of getting killed for not working hard enough you just get fired.

When I worked at Burger King they always wanted us to work fast so we could keep the drive thru timer down. I realized there was absolutely no incentive for us to do that other than to not be yelled at by the managers.

I liked to envision a system where we were rewarded for getting the drive thru timer to a certain time(s), and how much more fun work would be if we had something like that. Even just a small reward would give the wagies a reason to try.

Oh well.
