My life has gotten better over the past 18 years. Hell I graduated High school in 2002 a young dude full of drive and energy. Now I'm a 37 year old who's pretty laid back and set. Just 11 - 12 years from retirement. No stress, no debt (other than the house), married. Am I rich? Well depends. From a money point nope, but from a debt point yeah. Most people are so up to the ass in debt they can't lay hands on 10,000 or are looking at paying it off way the fuck out when they're old. They're also lucky to retire at all by age 65 due to the debt sucking out all the money that would've gone towards retirement. (a divorce or two along the way also claims a lot of it)
