OH CANADA
>Tue., November 3, 2020, 12:28 p.m. PST

Online platforms like Netflix and Spotify may end up spending more than $800 million on Canadian content over the next three years under a series of policy changes the federal government has proposed in a new bill Tuesday.

The proposed changes to the Broadcasting Act are meant to ensure online streaming platforms experiencing booming revenues face the same regulations as traditional broadcasters, which have seen profits decline in recent years.

"A separate system for online broadcasters simply doesn't work. This outdated regulatory framework is not only unfair for our Canadian businesses. It threatens Canadian jobs and it undermines our ability to tell our own Canadian story," said Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault at an Ottawa press conference.

>"The government believes that everyone who benefits from the system should contribute to it fairly."

pretty sure ~$20 is actually a sane price target, heck probably really conservative actually, after the MSFT partnership. If ther was no MSFT partnership i would have trimmed at $15

i don't trust China but to be fair it's around the price where i'd at least start DCA'ing in if i really wanted to get into it. just did a quick check on the live news in ToS on it. depends what you think of that in terms of FA, idk the in-depth FA on it myself but here's the chart.

Conventional rockets are rockets. You fire them once and they fall into the ocean. Every rocket ever flown except Shuttle (which dropped a big orange tank and boosters every flight) and Falcon 9 (which drops the upper stage but lands the lower) has fallen into the ocean (China drops stages on villages, I shit you not). Starship is fully reusable, upper and lower stage. So you're not throwing away half a rocket. Imagine the cost of an airline ticket if you threw away all the engines every flight.

Starship can be reusable hundreds of times, all parts of it. The exception is this hilarious lunar lander, which can't return to Earth because it lacks the heat shield.

really depends how many shares you're shorting. us retailers don't short all that many, as someone who has done it a lot with thousands of shares it's really not as big of a deal as they make it out to be. maybe it's a big deal for funds idk. you also want to have a method (like, again, keltner channel on the hourly or daily) to know when it's "high", or just historical values (hint: VIX itself, at 40+, is high, backtest it yourself, then compare to the VXX or UVXY or whatever you want, RIP TVIX. 80+ is literally apocalyptic and only happened in 2008 and covid, a.k.a. once in a decade essentially. before that? 1987. yeah.) you'll be fine for liquidity, trust me on this. the key here is being able to handle a covid or 2008 type scenario, *just in case*. as rare as it is you don't want to get margin called and fucked on something that is literally rigged (look up in contango) to go down. high volatility is LITERALLY unsustainable, as a phenomenon, like gravity is to physics. high volatility can literally, LITERALLY never last, idk how else to stress this fact. but if you short you must be able to handle holding and maybe DCA'ing just in case shit really hits the fan for a bit. your strat for that is up to you.

otherwise it's literally free money. here i can show you in pic related if you want to not include the covid crash for some recent examples. notice a pattern, anon? except that VXX is even worse than this in terms of downtrend because of in contango.

in short: if you short the VXX or UVXY it's free money as long as you can handle margin calls and time it on volatility spikes. that's it. that's the long and short story.

Here's a Starship (slightly older render) compared to a Saturn V and a Falcon 9. It's welded together in a field out of stainless steel by Mexican workers, which brings the costs down somewhat compared to the clean rooms of ULA and Boeing.

Both the upper and lower halves return. The upper half is a spaceship that can be refueled and sent to Mars. The lower half flies back to the launch site, so it can be refueled and launch another Starship.

before you ask:
>what's the catch?

the catch is you have to be able to account for pic related, the covid crash in march. it's an extreme, and i mean EXTREMELY, rare event. once a decade like i said. rare enough that if you actually follow the news and current events, you should know this might happen well ahead of time (like the elections, their possible contention, and possible, albeit unlikely, civil war, lmao). note how the shit drops like a rock afterwards? yeah. that's volatility for you. that's how it works. it always goes down in the long run. high volatility can never be sustained, remember that. and this was an event that literally priced in the death of all humanity, the second black plague. it's important to consider the FA on this, how powerful it was at the time. it's also important to consider on the daily time frame where the VIX was at 80+ and where the SPY was, because it basically called the bottem, as i will also repeat to you fellow anons. if we get another crazy crash like that, 80+ VIX is where you want to start DCA'ing into shit for the long haul, because either that's the bottom or we're all legit dead.

i've studied and backtested this shit a lot so feel free to ask questions. im getting drunk tonight while watching election results so you may not get another chance. volatility is really interesting and it makes sense the jews don't let us trade the VIX directly because it's basically free money if you understand it. if i could i'd long VIX at around 10-20 every time but i can't. backtest for yourself if you don't believe me.

Thanks anon. I know you don't do options but I'll drop this on you anyway. Pic related is a 150 put on VXX expiring 6/17/22. This put is so far in the money that changes in volatility and the effects of time decay are negligible. The upshot is it's basically a leveraged short with no possibility of a margin call. Look into it and next time an opportunity presents itself maybe pick up some of these. The benefit is no possibility of a margin call no matter how bad you mistime the top and since a put like this being far in the money and having a long expiration date means it is almost totally composed of intrinsic value so you don't have to worry about the usual options bugbears like losing out to time decay and IV crush.

>> No.23708543

>>23708475
oh, also,
>Also, which specific volatility instrument should I short? UVXY, VXX, VXZ, etc.

i just do the VXX. UVXY is basically the same thing but 1.5x. you could theoretically make roughly the same trades on both if you accounted for the 1.5x in terms of your position sizing, i feel like the VXX is just easier to use and calculate. if you want to get deeper into volatility and the UVXY feel free, but i figure ultimately it would basically be the same but you'd short fewer shares to account for the volatility. someone might say "well you can do shenanigans based on decay" but i don't bother with optimizing that much. VXX is a lot more straightforward ultimately. pretty much the closest you can get to straight-up shorting the VIX on a 1:1 basis with added in contango to make shorting even more appealing.

again: you can't lose shorting volatility. it will literally, LITERALLY, always go down. even more so because of in contango (based on /VX futures, that article i linked describes it iirc). so, double rigged to go down over time. the only thing you have to account for is margin calls, but as long as you do, it's literally unlosable. the trick is in how you manage margin calls in case shit truly hits the fan like covid or 2008 (12 years apart, mind you).

if you really want to get into shorting volatility, i suggest you study the VIX a lot, historically. you'll eventually come to understand what i mean by how it is a mean-reverting phenomenon and high volatility never lasts long, especially at 40+ on the VIX. see for yourself.

i might look into it. considering margin calling is the biggest problem to overcome. it saddened me the first time i started researching the VIX and realized it called the bottom in both 2008 and 2020, if nothing else. how you couldn't directly trade it because VIX around 10-20 was basically free money to buy if you could since it almost never got much lower than 12. basically, the vast majority of the time the volatility is stable, and very rarely does it spike during crazy shit happening, before it returns to the mean. like, if you could buy the VIX around 10-20 and hold it as long as you wanted (you can't do this with /VX), it would be free 100%+ trades over and over. i guess it makes sense why the jews don't let you do this.

i guess the main concern with options i'd always have is the cost of premium. i don't do options but i'd assume the MM's would account for volatility and would make the premium high enough to fuck you. if not, then yeah it'd be a great trade to take advantage of over and over again. i'll take another look at it this weekend when i have the time, at least. i think you can do options directly on the VIX too, although i don't know how much of a difference there is between options on the VIX and on the VXX. saved the pic at least, though.

This is gold. I have a mid 6 figure account built mostly on bitcoin and leveraged bull ETFs. I look for unique strategies that defy conventional wisdom with a high return and lower risk than the market gives them credit for. Right now I'm really liking your volatility short when VIX is sky high. It looks like a can't lose play. That coupled with buying deep ITM VXX puts is really making the wheels turn. I will study up and if I hit it big I'll post about it

again i can't stress this enough: the key is that you understand the limits of the VIX and why, and how to manage margin calls. but otherwise yeah. if you really want to dive deep into it, i highly suggest getting really knowledgeable about historical values of the VIX back to at least 1987 (black monday). considering laws that have been passed since then, that should basically never be physically possible again. 2008 and 2020 are more important """extreme""" values. 80+ VIX is a key point that you can line up with where the SPY was at that time, for example. of course that happens like once in a decade, and due to very obvious events you could probably figure out due to keeping track of current events. i also highly recommend learning all you can about the 2008 financial crisis, like literally all you can learn about it. some good starting points:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0BHAD4tQwQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QozGSS7QY_U

honestly the more you can learn about the 2008 financial crisis, the better. truly. it's one of the most important events you can learn about in regards to volatility. you can learn about 1987 too but that is long gone, but if you've got the time it's good to learn about.

>i guess the main concern with options i'd always have is the cost of premium. i don't do options but i'd assume the MM's would account for volatility and would make the premium high enough to fuck you.
I posted before I saw this but, yes, often that is the case. The trick is to get those long expiration date and deep in the money puts. An option's value is made up of two numbers, intrinsic value and extrinsic value. The intrinsic value is what you'd get if you assigned the option and liquidated the proceeds in the market right now. Extrinsic value is the fraction of the option's price that accounts for time and volatility. The larger fraction of the premium that is allocated to extrinsic value the more the option is at the mercy of market makers. The solution is easy. You want options that are very far in the money cuz the for every dollar an option is in the money, that's a dollar of intrinsic value. The relationship is linear. Get this though, every dollar an option is in the money, it loses a certain amount of extrinsic value. So if you go far enough in the money, the option is almost complete intrinsic value and almost no extrinsic value rendering the market maker powerless. You also are no longer subject to hardly any time decay and changes in the underlying volatility don't affect you. The only thing you are affected by is the price of the underlying. In this case you have a put so as VXX drops your put would moon.
Do some serious research and I think you'll find these puts the missing part of your puzzle.

short puts are synthetically the same as a covered call.

TLT does not collateralize the put, it collateralizes the short call (hence a covered call). You basically did the same position twice.

Also, naked puts are better than covered calls since, being one transaction, there is less slippage and commissions. Also, if you trade on margin, naked puts allow you 5:1 leverage (covered calls only allow 2:1 leverage) and the leverage is interest free (since you are not actually borrowing money).

That being said, I like to sell put credit spreads (a short put protected by a long put at a lower strike) on TLT. Its a great hedge against the other bull spreads I have against various stocks.

assume the VIX will never go higher than, say, 90 (80+, really), and plan accordingly. ideally you'd just throw on a 10x keltner channel like: >>23707559 and short VXX/UVXY/whatever when the VIX is up there, with a single position, and hodl. because most of the time it won't last up there before dropping. then you can consider selling half at some point like at the 50SMA or 200 SMA. i mean most of the time as in literally years it will act like this, again backtest for yourself on the VIX. but once in a decade shit will hit the fan like 2008 or covid, and you have to be on top of current events to handle that. a good rule of thumb is that VIX above 40+ is high, so you can start any potential DCA'ing from there on something like the VXX or UVXY or whatever is available at the time (TVIX used to be a thing and no longer is, who knows what will be available in the future if you want to use leverage). literally go back and look at where the VIX was during 2008 and covid, and where the SPY or NDX was during those times, for example. that's basically the highest volatility will ever get considering shit like circuit breakers now in place.

if you want to get in this game the best thing you can do is look at historical VIX values all the way back to 1987 and note the peaks and how long they lasted before cratering back to around 10-20. also note how often volatility is around 10-20 (hint: basically all the time).
