I've had my computer which was on a raid 0 array kick the bucket, wouldn't boot, but could be read when I booted off of Ubuntu. I've used the technique 6 times since then (Yea, I have a lot of systems that just stop booting on the main drives, don't ask me, I don't why), and each time they were readable on Ubuntu, just not bootable.
