So - and this is my guess all along - "the financial world" are slowly loading up their "reserves" with buying bit after bit of XRPs current "float" on the exchanges for ~$0.25 and who knows what promises and deals were already made as to who will receive the escrow.
Sometimes I get the feeling that the open/public exchanges are crowded with interlinked bots that trade among each other with pretty large bags/reserves to keep the price in a certain range and slowly syphon off whatever gets dropped into that pool by normies and people that simply quit waiting.

I think their logic will be quite a bit different.
I see at like this:
XRP will not be a currency, but a "storage of wealth" (like a box, an envelope, a container, a briefcase) that the whole financial industry agrees upon includes X amount of fiat currency. XRP will only be the envelope they exchange with each other and they all agreed upon each other that metaphorically within that envelope is a IOU valued at X amount of fiat currency.
I hope my writing makes sense somehow but seeing XRP as an envelope of an unilaterally agreed upon IOU of fiat currency I think is a pretty good visualization.

If and how institutions will acquire additional XRP "envelopes" for their closed circuit operation among themselves once it has started remains a mystery, I guess.

As of right now I suspect them to load up in secret with ~$0.25 for a blank envelope of XRP right off the exchanges.

If we ever get to unload our XRP "envelopes" at a price close to what they value their IOU inside is also a mystery.

You've got the idea right, but what you're talking about is the order book, and the "market" is the sum of all those orders, as well as the ongoing process of executing them, which all happens on the ledger.

"ledger" can mean a lot of things depending on context, but in XRP's case it refers to the XRP Ledger (XRPL) which is the software powering the whole shebang. So, it means everyone's wallets, all the current buy/sell orders for XRP or other tokens, and various other metadata -- basically everything you can do via the software's API: https://xrpl.org/public-rippled-methods.html

These run on nodes (a server running the `rippled` software, anyone can run it) that validate transactions, just like other blockchain cryptos, but there's no Proof-of-work/Proof-of-stack etc. but instead each node is configured with a list of other nodes (IP addresses) that they explicitly trust, and using that network of trust lines, the software solves something called the Byzantine Generals Problem and if something like 80% of the network agrees on a transaction, then it's validated and becomes part of the blockchain history.

I'd have to dig back into this stuff to answer your question about the flag, because it's honestly been a couple years since I read about it, but essentially there's a way to make an order that says that you're willing to use XRP as a swap mechanism, and how many times you're willing to swap, and how much you're willing to pay to make the order go through, so that pairs of currencies that don't have direct orders for one another go through. So for example if I want to buy Thai Baht using Mexican Pesos, and there's no one offering that deal, I could sell my Peso for XRP, use the XRP to buy Rubles, and sell the Rubles for Baht (if the accounts holding Baht were looking for Rubles). You could add in a few more steps like that which can automatically execute if you've set up the transaction to do so.

If you set it up already and your XRP is still there, whatever you did was probably safe. Anything compromised probably would have zipped away your wallet immediately. You'll be fine.
