Welcome to XMR General, dedicated to discussion of the world's leading privacy-coin!
Because Monero is secure, low-fee, and borderless, people can easily send money despite corrupt and broken governments or banks. This provides economic empowerment of individuals in oppressive countries or depressed economies.
Private financial history protects consumers and companies from price manipulation, supply chain exploitation, economic discrimination, or the like. Monero is the only cryptocurrency that has the features to serve as completely fungible, decentralized, electronic cash.
If you're new, feel free to ask any questions you like and a Monero Chad will be with you shortly.

What does XMR general think of Litecoin's mimble wimble upgrade?

Does it pose a threat?

>> No.23643804

>>23643778
litecoin has no purpose at this point, except that it's an old coin, can't compare to xmr in terms of use case

can we have Monero chan dressed up in a Halloween themed costume?

are you familiar with the privacy upgrade that is about to happen?
I wrote LTC off as a dead coin too, but being included on paypal, and this privacy mimble wimble upgrade, has me cautious. as it has a huge lead on XMR in terms of marketcap and brand recognition

>> No.23644083

>>23643990
not sure about brand recognition, it's been years since i've heard LTC mentioned anywhere at all, monero is constantly making the news. For the market cap, litecoin is infamous for some surreal long term holders, most of the supply is just sitting dead mostly forgotten about. I think it'd practically dead, just the whales locked away most of the supply so it's artifically pumping up the price with minimal demand

A threat? Lol no. Litecoin is completely transparent and as far as I know this is going to be optional privacy soft fork BS. Also MW doesn't have ring signatures so transaction graphs can more or less track every single transaction. Individuals who seek privacy will use Monero because of Monero's network effect with privacy.
I think it's great that other coins are looking for privacy upgrades, but even with this mimble wimble update they are still way behind behind where Monero CURRENTLY is.

Curious about long term use case of xmr. I feel like a lot of proponents push it as digital cash, but basing your economy on a deflationary asset would be horrible. Best case I can see it as an anonymous sidechain for some main coin given atomic swaps become a simple widespread process. Wondering if someone on the hype train saw the future of xmr.

Actually Monero has tail emission.
The block reward currently is 1.34, and will continue to decline until ~May 2022, where the block reward will stop at 0.6XMR. At that point, monero's block reward will stay at 0.6XMR until the end of time. So Moner is not deflationary because the tail emission creates a permanent reward/incentive for miners. Monero doesn't have halvings, so the supply and demand of the market is less "hyped" like Bitcoin's with the halving cycle. See pic related.
>Best case I can see it as an anonymous sidechain for some main coin given atomic swaps become a simple widespread process
yep this is a major usecase that we have been saying in the XMR generals for a while now. Once atomic swaps come around anybody who wants to hide their transaction history will want to swap into Monero. It will be the crypto swiss bank, so to speak.

>> No.23644683

the tail emission is minuscule and it will take 300 years until there's more xmr than btc. on the scale of our lifetimes, xmr is deflationary.

Pretty sure it's until about 2040. Nothing like 300 years.

Im glad to see this seems to be general consensus of its future use. While having a currency "controlled by the people" sounds good I think an economy based on an asset like btc (throughput issues aside) would be ridiculous.

>> No.23644900

>>23644815

i stand corrected. maybe i used the wrong block time or something. in any case, it's still a pretty slow emission and will be on the same order as bitcoin for as long as we live.
