Sovereigns are the most recognized Gold Coin in the world, the US even minted them in the late 40s because they were the only thing the Saudis would accept for oil. Sovereigns are so ubiquitous they don't need an inscribed weight or purity, everyone already knows it. They're pretty common and are still occasionally used as wedding gifts in the US, so I don't think you'd have too much trouble with recognizeability.
