Actually the best german cars were the 80s mb diesels. The world record for most miles in a car without breakdown was a mb 190d with 2.5 million miles.

The best way to describe the ger jpn relationship is that germans innovate and the japs perfect.
The japanese have a great attn to detail but the brilliant ideas originate in germany.
And not all german brands started to suck after the 80s. Porsche for example has ALWAYS been great.
And vw is def almost as good over the yrs
