sure, we have the ability to create simple life. We can make viruses. We can make robots that copy single-celled organism behavior. We can reproduce babies artificially and cross humans with pigs already. So sure.

But we cannot create sentient life with free will like we have. And we will fail at ("true") AI, if we continue to expect it will simply "acquire" consciousness from some basic logical building blocks that we can do now. Learning consciousness takes millions of year of evolution of real-time trial and error. Reality works on a certain time-scale and that means AI cannot learn, like we learned as a species, on any shorter time than that time-scale. Sure, we can replicate certain traits that we already evolved. But we cannot replicate an entire human yet from scratch.

It would at this point still be easier to augment existing humans with the data processing capacities of computers. I think that's the real way forward.
