The reason people oppose tax hikes isn't because they don't believe the government needs funding to fulfill its duties. It's because they KNOW the government wastes most of the money it gets on dumb shit like NGOs that are paid to teach critical race theory or on commissions to study how to pay reparations. So people rightfully wonder why 40% of their income is going to government and not to themselves, and why they should pay even more for the promise of services that are demonstrably inferior to actual companies who need to provide good service to survive.

As a wagie I pay about 35% income tax to state, county, and federal government. Add on payroll taxes and sales tax and it easily comes out to more than 40%. I get a refund every April, but that's because my taxes are prepaid by my company. I take steps to deduct as much as I can, but I still hate getting my pocket picked to fund some idiot mayor's luxury hotel project that's funded directly by the county government or the stupid, ass-backwards funding of homeless "programs" being supplied by NGOs that don't do anything to lower the number of homeless.

Why should I support a government that wants more taxes, more spending, and more permanent bureaucracy deciding what I am permitted to do in life?
