You want to close the spread before the last day because some brokerages can screw you over (like robinhood) on the last day, if at 4:00pm both legs are out of the money, but then shoot up ITM after 4:00, they won't exercise your long leg, but your short leg gets exercised before 4:30, so you end up owing tons on something you should be making money on, but that's basically a glitch on the last day.
