Most modern strands of economics (stemming from Keynesian economics) attempt to mathematically model human behaviour, but when the models go wrong they believe it is easier to try and force people to conform to the models than to admit their models were incorrect. Keynesians believe governments have special knowledge that allows them to 'correct' what they view as failures of the market to provide goods and services. Austrians believe that governments have the same knowledge problem as any other individual or organisation in that they cannot model people's wants, motives, desires, time preferences etc (as they constantly change), and thus external manipulation of a market always causes more harm than good. This also applies to the manipulation of the stock market, housing market, interest rates etc.

Austrian economists tend to support gold as money and silver as currency because money is supposed to be a recognised medium of exchange, not a tool for governments or rulers to extort the public and enrich themselves. Keynesians hate PMs because it removes control of currency from government, meaning government has less power to meddle.

I have no issue with economists attempting to model consumer behaviour or attempting to model reality, after all these are valuable techniques for minimising risk and identifying areas in which individuals' desires aren't being served. The problem is when economists believe their models ARE reality, and again, that's where it all goes to hell because a model can never reflect the sum of human preferences. It is easier to force people to adhere to the model than accept being wrong and change the model, or admit that models are just that and not really an accurate depiction of reality.

The way I always think about public gold holdings is that gold is real money, and foreign currency reserves are either speculative investments or holdings for the purpose of purchasing a particular monopolised good (in the case of the USD, oil is the good). Gold reserves act as protection from a powerful country manipulating the value of their currency.

It would probably be worth looking into when those outlier countries acquired their gold reserves, i.e. has it been recent or have they held them for a long time. I'll do a bit of reading about this myself and see what I can find.

Thanks anon, I've read a bit of that and while I think the label of 'surveillance capitalism' is stupid, it is interesting to see how technology can modify users behaviour. There was a neat study done a while ago on how Google Maps would re-route drivers through suburban streets when traffic jams happened on main roads, and those roads ended up needing significant repairs because they weren't built for heavy traffic. In the long run you started to see more businesses opening in the air dur to their being more traffic, and the demographic changed from houses to mixed with shops and petrol stations.

The tech itself isn't really to blame, it's doing what it was made to do, the tech users aren't really to blame either, it's just an unforeseen consequence of a new technology interacting with reality. Hence again why modelling human behaviour never really works, because you can't predict human behaviour.

thing is, Gold is so much money into a single piece that even taking into account any situation i may need to use the precious metal, it might still be hard to not vastly 'overpay' what people are willing to settle on. But with silver, whiles its much more manageable in how much the bits are worth, you need so much more of it to have the same worth in terms of space.
So is platinum a good middle ground. its still maybe a good amount of worth into a single chunk that may be more than you need to part with, but not as bad by a good margin as Gold is. and it will still be more space than gold, but not vastly as much as Silver.
only issue i can think of is, without proofing methods, people might not trust its not just silver, and its not as well known so its intrinsic value via name recognition might affect it more.
