is it a good idea to buy collectibles or is it basically useless unless its like buying ffvii when it first came out or the 1999-2001 pokemon card packs?

should i buy like sealed games from popular franchises now and pokemon card packs and shit or is it worthless unless its some homerun once in a lifetime release type shit

You gotta be more specific about what type of collectable you're interested in going into

I've been keeping my eye out for clearance 3DS games lately since they discontinued the 3DS system. Nintendo games are where it's at.

People here will call them bad investments because they don't 100x like shitcoins, but they can go up in value if you get the right games at good prices.

The source of these moons is from adults that grew up with something and want to spend money on it, generating demand for a product that has low supply because nobody bothered to hoard it at the time. You have to look for something that kids love today, that will have high emotional value for them, but that no one is stocking up on. I'm not sure this phenomenon will even happen for this generation though, given how digital everything is becoming.
Buying collectibles that are already highly valued is a game of chairs at the moment, and you definitely don't want to hold them long term since said adults eventually age and sell.
Physical video games are definitely a meme though, there are too many "investors" already hoarding them because currently old video games have mooned.

There's a fallacy in here if only it had a name. The "it already happened so it can never happen again" fallacy

It's like people saying don't by jungle set pokemon cards because the 1st edition Charizards already mooned so now obviously people will be hoarding jungle set cards and so they'll never have value

Bro don't buy fossil set cards bro the jungle cards already mooned bro people are already hoarding fossil set now

Bro don't buy the...

(for those unaware, 1st edition Charizards were famous back in the day for being worth like... $250)

It can't happen again because people are hoarding new games, so there will be enormous sell pressure at mint condition if demand ever comes.
The real collector demand for these products is actually a rather tiny set of whales. These moons happen due to limited supply. Old games mooned because people weren't hoarding them.
There is causality here, this isn't a claim that similar moons can't happen twice.

Buy the shit that hasn’t mooned yet. Base Set 1 is fully hyped already.

It's survivorship bias, I used to collect magic and recently sold of my top stuff.
Sure, I made a couple hundred percent on Force of Will, Wasteland, Flooded Strand, Time Spiral and some other stuff but 99% of my cards are worth nothing.
Same goes for vinyl records etc, cool you got 300 dollars for Giant Steps but your 40 Duke Ellington records are worth 10 cents each.

You also have to take into account that storing things is incredibly expensive at these housing prices and Ebay / Paypal charge ridciolous fees when you eventuall cash out.

It's not worth it, just buy stocks.

Treat it like real estate, buy for immediate cashflow not appreciation.

Example: I sell commerical usage rights for music through NFTs, along with the project files so you can make your own versions. That means you can use it to make money outside of just hoping the token goes up and reselling it. Those are the kinds of NFTs with real value.

Insurance would probably fit this too. Don't forget NFTs can be contracts or services not just gifs.

I was thinking about buying the new mario collection on switch. It's only being sold till next year then it will no longer be available. Will probably be worth a bit later down the line
