i want to make money consistently in the market using skill though. i bought GME at 7 and someone said it was dumping around 8 or so and i sold it thinking i'd buy back in lower, then it went up to 10 and i bought 200 shares and i was down for awhile while it was in the 9's but then it spiked today and i sold half. i'd like to buy that half back at $10 again but watch it just keep going up because nothing makes any sense besides shorts getting fucked.

Best part about GME is someone mentioned that no volume came through today that indicated large blocks of short covering. Very few shorts were covered so far. We'll know more tomorrow when the Short Interest report comes out.

Short interest is published uhh, something like once a month. The last time it was published was 9/15. This means that 153% number is old by almost a month. If the Short Interest report comes out and says 10%, for instance, then shorts already covered for the most part. But if it comes out and says 135% (or higher), then shorts were still around and still need to cover.

Now imagine that someone somewhere tells you that the price of gold is expected to fall sometime in the next 3 weeks.
You realize that there is an opportunity to make money here if you simply borrow the gold from your mom and promise to return it in a few weeks. All you have to do is to sell it at it's current price, and then buy it back a few weeks later at its expected lower price, that way you get to keep a profit (difference between the sale price and the repurchase price) and your mom gets her gold back

However, a week passes by and distressingly, the price of gold begins rising for some reason. This has the nasty effect of pushing the price higher and higher and higher, and for you, it means that you'll have to rush to buy a bar of gold before the price goes any higher as you're no longer comfortable waiting for it to go down, ironically driving the price even higher.

Now replace the gold with company stock, (and the mom with a broker/lender) and you have what is known as a short squeeze.

Options suffer from theta decay, they also need good volume or you might have trouble (or impossible) getting out of them, especially if things go against you. Shorting is using shares, which, unless its an extremely thinly traded stock, will be much easier to cover with.
Options also need people writing them for you to buy them. Some stocks don't even have options for certain strikes because the options market is so thinly traded. Those are often ones where shorting is a better alternative.
