want to hear a secret? you can sell some of it and hold some of it. in all honesty the best strategies involve selling half of your position at some amount of profit (usually small) and then moving your stop loss up to break even so the trade can no longer fail, it is only a question of how much money you make.

sell when exuberance hits or right after a stock shoots up 20-30% because of good earnings

I rode shopify to some great gains, then sold like a cuck too early into covid (maybe around May) thinking it became too overvalued. bought back in due to fomo mid summer, then recently sold again.

I've made good gains on them and i think they are great to own because covid doesn't appear to be resolved any time soon. BUT a lot of their revenue came from small businesses adapting to online - and some of these businesses do want to return to more in-person sales in their brick and mortar. i think there will be a clawback but otherwise good long term investment.

honestly no opinion on the others

Strategies that involve selling portions of the position are opposed to the most fundamental rule of trading: "cut your losses and let your profits ride."

Your risk management should be setting stops in your favor based on volatility. You're lowering potential profits when you hop out of favorable trades for no reason.

There should be concrete evidence that the trade is done if you're going to sell.

So what are you worried about? That market will open tomorrow down 50%? That won't happen. It may be a bit down. Then you can sell, and have only lost a bit. Then you can do better research for your next entry point. Or it may go up a bit. Then you will suddenly consider yourself a genius, and having prevailed in spite of the horrible anons that only try to trick you into losing all your money. This is a 100% true, and something my professor has noted as well.

Hell I distinctly remember him confiding to me that he was rejected from one grant because the NSF program director for that area (a woman) was "only looking for female PIs right now". And his political opinions are as generic soi-left as it gets.

As far as the papers go, the literature is absolutely fucked. In our particular area (Xray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, which my PI is a world-class expert in) there's a huge battle over C1s peak indexing. I'll spare you the details but it turns out that half or more of the existing literature is absolute garbage that deserves to be thrown out and almost no-one is willing to acknowledge it (something which drives my PI up the wall). If you retired after 2 YEARS of making 100K you wouldn't even get that much. Even if you had 200K (post tax sitting in the bank), and had a monthly budget of 800, that would last about 20 years, so retirement age of 65 would run out at 85, that's not accounting for inflation, or rising medical bills as you get older

Saving for the long term, it pretty much is free money. Do you think that the average person actually is putting all of their money into calls and puts and shit? Even if you put your 100K into AT&T/Coke/DIV, the stock value may not grow, but the dividends are basically guaranteed, and much more effective than a 2% savings account. Yes we know you are a commie. But that's not what you do when you are responsible for the well being of a family.
Either you will one day have a family, and then you'll want to build a time machine and travel back in time to shoot your current self for being such a fucking retarded moron, or (more likely) you will remain your mentally stunted self which will not lead to anyone wanting to hitch their wagon to yours. You'll be bitter over this too, and again reach the conclusion that everybody else is wrong (especially women, of course) and you're the only clear thinker.
You're pathetic dud, grow up.

Oh, and to add to that, some people get so many dividend stocks, they just live off of the dividends, and as long as companies don't cut their dividends, it literally is free money even if the stock value plummets. This is free money that can be passed on to their children as well. If you don't have an income, dividends are tax free to a certain (high) amount
