That’s if they grade highly for a 10. It’s possible that they come back as 8s or 9s which significantly decreases the value. Plus you have to be out of the money for several months because PSA is backed the hell up.

Single first edition is definitely a good buy, even the non holos these days. Though the demand is rising. If you are not concerned about condition can definitely buy a lot cheap, if you are looking for potential psa10 1st edition cards I would look for pack fresh listings.

Nice one on the packs. I remember ten years ago I bought a couple of booster packs on a whim and opened them up (no shinys unfortunately lol). Then I didn't buy any cards until 2017 lol. If only I kept buying back 10 years ago!

Pokemon store in Japan re-released the first gen cards back in 2016 for 300 yen each and I bought tons... Now they're up to $20 each.

Nice collection! I have a shining Raichu from childhood but it is beat up too. Shining zard is good any way you look at it, poor condition or not. I think I was one of the last kids in my year to be collecting pokemon cards too, I think I was about 10-11 years old. Even though it started to be seen as 'not cool' I was still drawn to trading them on the playground (I had a brief stint in pokemon tazos around this period too). As things were changing so much in the card design I think that added to the reasons why I left trading them.

For you collector anons out there, do you keep these decks like the Brushfire deck sealed, or open them and get individual cards graded by PSA.

those decks are mostly common cards, these mass produced common cards not worth getting graded

booster packs are what people might open to get the uncommon cards graded, but even then, those have all been weighted (booster packs with holos are heavier) and unless you're pulling the sealed pack from a sealed box, it's unlikely any single unopened booster packs still floating around out there will have any holos

My best card is Gold Star Metagross, pulled it from a pack when I was 8 years old. Even back then I knew it was special, I immediately put it in a card protector where it's been ever since. Still ungraded, but it's gotta be at least a 9.

I remember when I was in a Pokemon League at my local On Cue, and I wasn't there the day when they were handing out these promotional cards

I went back the next day or just sometime later to see if I could still get one, and since they were done with the event the clerk was just like "here kid" and gave me a huge stack of these Mews as well as whatever was part of that promo (Eevees and Meowths and I swear there was a 4th one)

I mostly ended up just giving them away or just losing them. Haha isn't that funny

9 is where a grade starts to mean a card is verifiable nice. 8 and lower is kind of meh. Mine should probably be a PSA 6 desu, I don't know what Beckett was thinking. Regardless, I paid $1000 for this card last year. Ridiculous.

It's not a scam, it's just not as great as people think it is. Why do people want old toys still in the box? hats still with the tag? it makes them look more "legitimate" or "presentable". I like it because it keeps my cards safe and the quality standards for 9-10 are pretty solid. I like it even more because it means selling cards at a big premium to casuals.

I've got mixed feelings on the state of grading. On one hand, graded cards give you a fairly objective measure on the condition of the card, making it very difficult to get ripped off. You know exactly what you're getting and won't get fakes. But on the other hand, cards are practically worthless unless they're graded and if you're a seller you're basically forced to grade them if you want to make any real money. And yeah, grading in general has driven the prices of these cards probably x100 or more since it makes everything seems more exclusive and professional. In the end grading was an inevitable and necessary evil.
