From what I’ve gathered, ODL is just a market buy/sell for XRP with currency/assets at two different ends. The value has been transferred, yes. But it doesn’t appear that XRP just stays pooled into one location making the supply or accessibility to that supply less scarce.

In simple terms: Currently, XRP is worth around $25bn.
The market it's chasing (interbank payments) is worth $15trn (I think).
In order for XRP to function with that market, it needs to moon. It cannot fulfil its intended function without mooning.

I don't know about the gold-backed thing - I think gold is too volatile. But then again, I'm from a time and a world where gold has been very volatile, so maybe I'm just not seeing the potential. Maybe if golds shoot up in price, some of that volatility will be smoothed out?

I think there's probably a degree to which that is true - high volatility means you don't need infinite supply for it to work. Nonetheless, that's balanced against needing a minimum supply to ensure liquidity. I'd take it as - XRP needs to rise, but it wouldn't need to rise infinitely - there's a point at which the price provides the right balance for required liquidity in the market (what that price is, only Ripple probably know).

I don't think COVID was planned by a monolithic group of elites to get us to transition. I think it was in the works already but COVID just forced the timetable.
