22580234 No.22580234 [Reply] [Original]

>Stanford researchers dropping a bomb on ETH 2.0 security that must be addressed.
>Gasper [20] is the current candidate protocol for Ethereum 2.0’s beacon chain.
>The Gasper protocol is complex, combining the finality gadget Casper FFG [21] with the LMD (Latest Message Driven) GHOST fork choice rule in a handcrafted way.
The Bomb:
>In [20], Gasper’s finalized ledger is shown to be safe. However, it is claimed to be live only under a non-standard probabilistic network delay model.
>Following the standards advocated by [24] for the design and analysis of blockchain protocols, we analyzed Gasper under a standard security model, and found it to be insecure.
>In particular, we discovered a liveness attack on Gasper in the standard synchronous model where messages can be delayed arbitrarily by the adversary up to a known network delay bound.
>Moreover, because this liveness attack is a balancing attack causing the votes to split between two parallel chains, this attack also denies the safety of the available ledger even when there is no network partition.
This is what a clusterfuck dev process gets you.

This is going to look especially bad and inompetent as they just pushed phase 0 forward. Thay cannot ignore this.

So they have time to fix this shit. It's not like finding a security issue on something that's already released. That'd be actually bad.

right, but it means Beacon Chain will be delayed again, and this is no small fix. meanwhile twitter has been orgasming over news that phase 0 was nearly ready.

price go up because Vitalik is pretending that this research didn't happen. the shoe is about to drop anon, this has to be addressed and a philosophical vitalik tweet will not work this time.

takes mucho time because ETH 2 is super complex. i don't know how fundamental the problem is, but i do know that they can't just proceed.

It’s hilarious that this is all because Vitalik MUST carry over data and state from ETH.

If this was made as a new chain, it would be ready today. I can’t see another result other than making a new chain completely like a more severe version of when ETH classic was abandoned

This beacon chain shit is a nightmare
Trying to keep 1.0 alive in 2.0 just because Vitalik failed to see POW being un scalable and not using POS

If it ends up being a new chain needs to be made abandoning ETH 1 it would make more sense to just migrate entirely to polkadot

I am just skeptical of this being a massive issue because of the phrasing that it is “safe under a nonstandard probabilistic ...” or whatever it was. It sounds a bit like one of those things that are academic circlejerking not an actual issue when looking at it practically. QRD on what this actually means, bigbrain anons? What is the worst case attack with this, and what are the conditions to make it happen?

I am too much of a midwit to interpret the actual paper.
