i've said it before and i'll say it again: look at the VIX during the 2008 GFC and 2020 covid crash. note when it got around 80+ and roughly where price was on the SPY during that time, or just different individual stocks in general. it calls the bottom very well. that's what i'd personally be waiting for. again, for a quick cheat sheet on the VIX, generally speaking:

>it's around 10-20 the vast majority of the time. this represents when the market is stable and either flat or trending quietly. obviously often closer to 10 than 20.
>30-40 is a strong dip. for a recent reference, the softbank meme that dumped the nasdaq over 10% in 2-3 days and stocks like AMD dumping around 20% got the VIX up to a max of 38.28
>50-60 usually represents a Flash Crash
>80+ is pricing in the literal apocalypse. this has only happened twice in the past 20 years, 2008 and covid. both considering the potential collapse of the world economic system as a whole basically. assuming it isn't literally the end of the world, this is probably roughly where the ultimate bottom would be of any given crash
>the only time it's been higher was black monday, 1987, but that doesn't count because they didn't have circuit breakers or various other shit in place back then (which to be fair came about literally because of this event), but even then as you might imagine it was a great buying opportunity. it topped out at 172.79 then.

"time in the market > timing the market" exclusively relies on strawmen. For example, the last time someone presented that meme here, the accompanying infographics (from schwab I believe) decided that 'timing the market' meant capturing the best single-day gains and never being in the market at any point in time beyond that, which is obviously not what it means at all.
Point is, there are always pullbacks, and it's almost always better to buy on the pullback than on the top of a bubble. If you buy during a pullback, you're virtually guaranteed to get your 10-20% in a month+, which is also excellent for psychology, thus increasing gains potential. If instead you just put your money in, you could be so unlucky as to wait 10 years before you see positive returns. The only time it either doesn't matter or time in the market truly wins is if you have infinite time to invest.

the stores themselves are doing great, if you did your DD then you'd know it's all entirely corporate mismanagement that's fucked over gamestop over the last decade. $32 million in bonuses over the last two years even when Gamestop was on a massive decline, absolute fuck ups on handling covid lockdowns, only sold their corporate jet (yes a fucking plane for personal use of their executives) because shareholders since 2011 got so fed up and stopped being passive.

dunno why anons find it so hard to understand why a short-term play like this ultimately has little downside yet so much upside potential. No one is shilling for people to hold GME past Q1 2021 (unless new developments happen)

While Schwab's methodology is arbitrary (if the study you're referring to is the one I'm thinking of), you haven't given a competing methodology. While it sounds reasonable in theory, waiting for a 20% pullback will often mean watching the index go up by more than 20% in the meantime. That means that even after the pullback, you're behind where you'd have been by buying in immediately. And your example of having to wait 10-20 years to break even is obviously a worst case scenario.

You can make your own tvix with deep itm options or selling puts on, say, vxx. Deep itm lets you select arbitrary leverage, which degrades as the movement is smaller (e.g. you get near 1x leverage if it doesn't move, but >1.5 if it moves a little in either direction, and >3x if it moves a lot). Selling puts is the same but requires more capital to secure it, and gives more leverage if the underlying doesn't move much or moves slightly negatively, while it gives less leverage if it moves a lot.

Japan is real, not necessarily worst-case unlike some emerging markets. For US market, 20 years would be a worst-case but 10 years sure as fuck wouldn't be.
5-10 years is a fairly typical top-buy scenario.
I don't need to give a competing methodology to point out another methodology is crap and disingenuous. Fuck off with that weak shit. And I've also never mentioned a 20% 10-years-wait pullback. Just looking at 1std + ma and buying when the bottom is reached would be far better than "time in the market" and may happen once every 3 months. This should bring post-dip-recovery gains for the market timinger somewhere around 3-5% above the market timer (as modeled by average buy-in price between the previous such pullback and the current one), which, as usual, compounds to ridiculous levels pretty quick. Bonus point for selling when the top channel is reached.
This is easy enough to backtest and usually systematically outperforms buy and hold, though it's not as impressive as adding an inversion strategy like getting into volatility when the top is reached.
Even just buying above MA and selling under MA is known to significantly outperform buy and hold in most scenarios, and always outperform in the long run (see LRS).

That's just equivalent to saying "if you do good research, you'll beat the market." Which is a tautology: if the research doesn't help you beat the market, it must not have been very good.

There have been some fairly famous studies showing that most active fund managers underperform a simple buy-and-hold strategy, and that the longer the time horizon, the fewer can do it consistently. That's partly because of their fees and expenses, and also partly because they're sometimes forced to do things they'd rather not because of fund rules. But even having said that, if the full-time professionals aren't able to get a significant advantage over the market despite all their time and research, it certainly makes me skeptical that I can.

i feel like the issue with this idea right now is how fucked up the fundamentals of the economy are especially in the US, with the pandemic still in full swing and the FED printing trillions with 0% interest rates, lots of people out of work and businesses closing, moratorium on mortgage payments, etc etc.

there will absolutely be another crash coming up, idk when but obviously this fucked up shit has to get fixed at some point. the covid crash was a perfect time to enter a long term buy and hold, if you got in there you're fine even in the event of another crash. you didn't want to be buying in at the top before that happened though, would you? i guess my main point would be, at the very least, your initial entry point is very important, THEN you can get into "adding on red days" or whatever.

im just mad i only learned how to figure out where the bottom is AFTER the covid crash and missed out. but im certain there has to be a major correction at some point to make the market line up with fundamentals again. and if the market stays completely detached from fundamentals i'll stick to day trading because i don't trust it for shit, it isn't based on anything real.

the easiest thing that could cause it, although none of us think it will happen any time soon im sure, is whenever the FED increases interest rates again. we're already at fucking 0% they can't just go into negative interest rates or some shit they're out of ammo and need to restock at SOME point.

The point of the Schwab methodology is to show that, counterintuitive as it seems, someone who consistently picked the best possible time to buy in would still underperform a DCAer. For most investors, that's a fairly rational comparison. I don't consider that disingenuous.
Japan-style permacrab is an acceptable worst-case scenario (or if you want even worse, Iceland). But it's worth noting that, if you were stuck investing in Japanese companies, you'd be at the same disadvantage and might still have trouble beating the Japanese index. I'd be interested to see a study of Japanese fund managers vs the Nikkei, to see if they had any better or worse luck compared to their American counterparts.
As for the strategy you described, give me a sec and I'll backtest it myself.

I want to make some money but I feel like a reckoning is coming in the market. It will always be much harder to gain back what you lose percentage wise, yet we're approaching February highs. 90% of people polled think that stocks are currently overvalued.

Fund managers never have and never will matter because they inherently are not at an advantage by having good returns compared to some index and don't typically perform better as a company if they perform better or worse than an index.
The point is that the schwab methodology shows precisely nothing at all because it's a literal strawman, and that there is plenty of research showing that even the basic strategies I outlined (which are, by definition, timing the market strategies) greatly outperform buy and hold (i.e. time in the market).
Their methodology for "timing" is NOT to put whatever you have on hand at an optimal timing, it's literally to put the entire thing in before the day of the greatest gains, then removing the money, which is an insane strawman.

To clarify: lump-sum (specifically, all in at the very beginning) consistently beats DCaing a fixed total amount in over a series of weeks or months. This supports the "time in the market" position: the lump-summer maximizes time in the market by putting it all in at once.

Like you said, though, most people don't invest this way because they don't Have a huge chunk of money sitting in their bank accounts. Instead, they have a certain amount of each paycheck they can invest. The comparison in the Schwab study was something like:
Person 1: just buys $1000 each month, no matter what.
Person 2: puts $1000 cash each month in a bank account, then uses that lump amount to buy each time the market crashes
Person 3: puts away $1000 each month, then fucks up by lump buying right before every downturn.
Your intuition is probably that #2 would work the best, but in fact #1 blows them out of the water.

So to clarify: lump-sum all in immediately if best if you suddenly get a lot of money. Simple "buy X each week/month" is best if you're limited by current income. Both are strategies that maximize time in the market.
