No, it is ramping up with an updated. Look up Zoom Towns.
Everyone is fleeing the cities to remote work where they feel like. People are betting big on remote work taking over at breakneck speed thanks to the virus. This is revitalizing and reshaping the digital nomad idea. Business building are going on sale left and right as some are going completely virtual, with an occasional meeting somewhere.

It going to be a train-wreak in a year or two when everyone realizes they can't roam free and just knock out a few hours of work at their laptop now and then. It didn't work before, and it is not going to work now, such a radical change has left the infrastructure behind as it take more then an Fiber Optic line to get things done. Theoretically it could be done if we had remote robots and other things to support it, but that is still in the distance future.

I load boxes for a living at one of the most advanced factories on the planet.
And I load boxes as my job.
The fact my job even exists is proof we haven't gotten past the boots on the ground problems.

I don't really care how people work, I've worked in all kinds of places in my long life including remotely, so I got no reason to be jealous. What matters is the work gets done. I question those great gains as such things are moved by more complex market forces, and will likely change in a relatively short time once things settle down. I suspect you among many others are miss applying micro economic to a macro economic problem.

Will more people work from home and will it have benefits, Yes
Will it be the promised work from home revolution we have talked about for years, No
Will there be a negative market reaction when people realize this work from home thing has been overblown, I am betting my many years of retirement on it

There are countless tiny details that one needs to see up close and think and react to in real time. I mean I could work from home if I had a remote robot and some nice force feedback controls. But that kind of stuff is expensive so it is cheaper for a person to do it. You know why Tesla ripped out all those cutting edge robots in their Gigafactory? Humans were more adaptable and thus cheaper for the constantly changing assembly lines. You know why a electric car parts guy I know owns airplane and pilots licenses, despite all the upkeep? Because he can close bigger and better deals face to face. And that's not even going into the supply chains to keep robots and airplanes running. If it were a static open source standards it may work, but with the constant changes you need people to look at the problem, and cameras can only show so much. Like how nobody sees the giant rocket booster stuck under Starman's Tesla because the cameras and popular photo shoots never show that massive detail, and nobody will now it that it is outside of range

i did this! i was the cheerful white face in a suit for Samsung insurance in Saigon. it was the most hilarious job i've ever had. literally got paid $2000/mo to teach english to their managerial staff/execs 2 hours a week and to attend meetings and look professional in a suit and occasionally to record voice-overs, give presentations when they met with other companies, and sit in a cubicle near the front door that was visible through the glass from the hallway. and wear a suit. i was snorting heroin in the bathroom and having an affair with a secretary at the bank on the ground floor of the office tower, we'd go to a love hotel over lunch and she'd make me facefuck her and tie her up and stuff. Ah, Candy Nguyen.

Good times. I ended up leaving after 4 months because i honestly felt guilty about how easy it was and i was bored as fuck (also getting increasingly strung out, and Candy drifted away, and i think they started to catch on about the frequent sniffly bathroom trips and me nodding out at my desk)

i am much more responsible and off the drugs now, back in the mother country. but it was good while it lasted

Also I have been deep in so many beautiful women from so many different countries and made friends from around the world so if I ever end up in South Africa, Australia, any European country, most countries in Asia, several countries in Africa and the Middle East I will have a local guide and a couch to crash on, or if i get tired of life in America I can call them up and they'll help me get a shit job or whatever

travel is the best thing to do in your 20s. the world is a big place filled with awesome people and beautiful things- go experience it! if you're unhappy at home- if your life is dull and monotonous- there's nothing requiring you to stay. i mean, it's a little different because of Corona but this won't be for forever

This debate would be a lot more interesting if you actually responded to the claims rather then coming up with clever insults. I can also cite anecdotal personal experiences at fortune 125 company, as I did in framing part of my last post.

While time and money are a major part of the business. One need to consider on a more fundamental level how the business creates value and why it exists at all. After all a business in bankruptcy liquidation is saving everyone time and money, with far less output while generating more revue from the sale of their assets. But one don't call this a good business. And we have non-profit businesses as well which flies in the face of the profit motive.

Value is a perception based. Thus one can make many types of value, which can be exchanged for many other types of value. Pick a market you think gains from this and I will try to educate you on how the root of that value will still be bounded by the boots on the ground limits.

And let me remind you before you continue that my argument is not that the is zero gains from the work from home movement, but that it is over blown and will not fundamental change things as the new normal will be similar to now once things settle down.

digital nomad is good, if you are surrounded with other people or are doing a project/activity/work

you need to have something to do while being a 'digital nomad'
-either that's travelling
-exploring
-working
-projects

you can't just go to a foreign country, stay at home on your computer, and expect to be happy (i did this and i was depressed)

need to actually do activities and try new things for 'digital nomad' to be worth it
