If you get unemployed/lose your job etc. your life is not automatically ruined, you can literally keep up with your old style of living (especially if you have managed to pay away your debt). The state fucking sponsors you and the more skilled you are to ask for gibs the more you get. It's pretty much impossible to end up homeless here in Finland for example. Only the schizophrenic alcoholics do because and from their own volition

European countries pay higher taxes and are consistently rated as "happier" by a myriad of important metrics.

This is because the floor is lifted in European countries, whereas in the US you have an unbelievable wealth gap. Of course everyone in the US expects themselves to be successful etc. but facts are facts and it's kind of sad the way things work out in the end.
