The thing with options is it's all about what you're trying to accomplish. If you think you see something nobody else does that will spike the price significantly in the short term then get something OTM and bet accordingly.
But any other time, assuming you are making a directional play on something you're pretty sure will move in your direction but you just want some extra leverage then go with LEAPS with a delta of 80 or 90. You want the option that trades most like the underlying just with that added leverage kick. Your enemies are theta and sudden changes in implied volatility. The cure is to reduce extrinsic value as much as possible which the high delta does for you. With that, most of the option's value is inherent in the fact that you could assign it right now and get most of your money back after liquidating the proceeds in the market. If you're making a longer term bet and can't say that then you're buying the wrong option
