The point is average down is "catching a knife/timing the market" under a different name. Better to still have capital on a downturn in a winner than to be out of capital in a continued downturn with a loser. Profit taking is when it goes up in either case. You just protect your cost basis with the latter more than the former. It is easier to look at a "dip" and conclude its over than to be in a dip and conclude when it will stop (i.e. predict the future). Psychologically, average down feeds into fear of realized losses and average up is the more uncomfortable but logical. The "wall of worry" exists for a reason.
