It's less of an index in itself and it's more like a coin backed by an index fund. Each time someone sells statera or exchanges it, it burns an amount of the entire token. Instead of becoming less scarce and money printer going brrrrrrr which kept Ethereum from ever being worth too much, money printer eats the supply. Eventually this will become a more stable coin than anything else on the market for this reason.
