The US has 43% of all the farmable crop land on earth. It is also the best farmland on earth being centered on the 35th parallel dead center of the temperate zone. (I live right there). This location gets the maximum benefit of sunlight in the annual cycle of any latitude on earth. This zone is typically described as 45 North to 25 North. It actually extends a bit north and south of this.

The US also has the most massive ocean current on earth the Gulf Stream that enters the Yucatan Channel and executes a counter clockwise loop and then exits the Gulf of Mexico via the Florida Strait. Then this current in the summer months hugs the Atlantic Coast upwards to Cape Cod.

What this does is that coupled with the massive arctic air current from Canada collides with the air sheared off from the Gulf Stream waters a massive plain nearly 1500 miles wide and extending from the US Gulf Coast well into Canada. This has produced a well watered plain and also a very well watered east coast. These air currents are funneled together between 2 large mountain ranges.

This makes US Crop production so high you cannot imagine it. It also gives the US about 85% of all world food production. So in short answer to your question not only can it produce enough domestically, it does. And it produces for very nearly every other nation on earth. It gives the US a virtual monopoly on food production.

It also has several mountain valleys in the West US that are profoundly productive as well.

No nation on earth is so well situated for food production on earth. If we have a famine the whole world trembles. Nations in the rest of the world are made and fall on US food. This is the very definition of a Super Power. Import of food from other countries is pure convenience. For example Table Grapes are exported during US Winter from Chile to the US. Of course the trade reverses in the summer.
