Algos are primed to watch for unusual call/put buying as "someone knows something", which with all the memes with TSLA there were plenty.
The call chain on TSLA has always had strike prices 2-4x the current stock price. So you can buy absolutely insanely OTM calls on TSLA for pennies on the dollar in large quantities about a week before expiration to cause the next step. The sellers of those calls now have to buy 100 shares to hedge upside risk. So you buy 100 calls, now there will be about 10000 more shares looking to be bought. That overwhelms the asks and the price spikes. Those deep OTM calls, with huge gammas, now spike on this sudden upward volatility and you turn around and sell them for 40x the premium you paid for them. This was compounded by the follow short squeezes.
This has only been possible on TSLA because the options chain was both a big multiple of the current price and because the underlying was already "expensive". You couldn't do this with GME for example. The strikes are too far relative to the %gain that corresponds to a 1 point increase.
It appears so far that this died when Elon got his 5 billion from banks in an ATM equity sale (previously seen only with biomemes). So he was probably in on it or some big MM was taking advantage of it.
There might still be some juice left in this manipulation with 2 meme "calayst" events: SP inclusion and battery day. After that, TSLA will likely free fall back to realistic valuations before the fucking crash in march. I honestly think that could be double digits now with the split.
