no one knew during the dotcom bubble that amazon, apple, google, microsoft, etc. would be the ones to make it through the test of time and become trillion dollar companies. There were dozens of companies that all seemed to have great growth prospects in the long run, and even for very well informed investors there was no way to know which ones would win out. And so many of them were valued as if they would become future amazons or ebays etc, until the multiples just got way too high and the selling stopped. So there is no way to look back at the dotcom mania and say "oh, investors should have just realized that [this] handful of stock were really good value and all the other ones were garbage"
there was no way to know which of the stocks would be able to realize their growth possibilities and which would falter

in some ways we are seeing it now, where people are pricing in the ability of all the tech growth companies to take increasing pieces of the pie (grow earnings over time). But the problem is, it's the same pie! we can't have facebook, zoom, google, apple, etc. all have growing pieces of the videoconferencing space, it's only one pie. even if that pie gets bigger, all of the tech participants won't be able to grow their "slice" of it by 20% per year per decades. At the end of the day, someone has to be wrong. But there is no way to know until 20 years later and we can look back and say, "oh, of course pets.com and sun microsystems aren't going to make it ! "
