Think I read about that. The guy had it on his ledger from years ago, he got a pop up saying to update the wallet, after he updated it it immediately started a withdraw to the scammer. He was running an old version of the wallet. Might have gotten some details here wrong.

He downloaded an old version of electrum wallet that had a vulnerability that allowed nodes to send an error message to the user in plaintext. This fake error message sent by a malicious node directed the user to a fake electrum wallet download that stole his money as soon as he sent funds to that fake wallet.

All in all this is probably tax evasion. Who the fuck sends 16M$ to an old version of electrum wallet without testing a tx and for no discernible purpose? Why all the sudden did he want to switch to an old wallet? If he was trying to cashout why not send from his current wallet to exchange? Why no test tx before you send 16M? Its possible its real but damn its stupid and unbelievable if so

This shits fucked. Holding crypto is not safe. I remember my Mew was broken into and only my small amount of eth was stolen but my large stack of Enjin was left untouched. My friend who works in computer science explained that it must have been a program that was installed on my computer that would send eth from MEW to that wallet. I can still use that wallet on other computers just not my old laptop. You might as well just leave your crypto on an exchange and enable 2fa.

why would anyone
1. hold their whole stack in 1 wallet instead of splitting between different wallets and maybe even leaving some on a 2FA exchange as you said
2. with 50-100K+ not invest in a $150 laptop and use offline cold storage for most of their stack
is beyond me. too careless with money
