Literally brough from reddit
>Apologies if this topic has been covered before or is breaking any rules. Throwaway for obvious reasons.

>I feel like I ruined my life by dabbling into cryptos as a clueless college kid.

>I first caught wind of it when a buddy of mine said he was going all in on ETH in May of last year. I said hell with it, signed up on Coinbase and threw $5000 into crypto. Mind you this is like half of my life savings, but in the grand scheme of things it's not too much to lose.

>Well, I went down the rabbit hole and struck gold a few times, hitting 10x's on multiple alt coins... I brought my 5k initial all the way up to a $880k portfolio in December 2017.

>Now I should have listened. I should have cashed out, yes. Once I hit $1 million I was going to... I would have been set. And then, JUST like that the market tanks going into the new year.

>I didn't know anything about taxes so I never bothered to set aside anything. They really never do teach this stuff. I gambled in more than a few bad ICOs to start 2018, had some money in coins that absolutely plummeted with no chance of recovering, etc. Today my portfolio sits at $125k, a far cry from my $880k . My estimated tax liability for 2017 is about 400k (live in California).

>I'm a student and I work part time making $12/hr as a retail associate at Barnes & Noble. I haven't paid any taxes or filed any returns for 2017. I wanted to but I have no idea where to begin.

>Here's the 1099-K Coinbase reported this spring: https://imgur.com/a/cpPwR9u

>Is my life over?

>tl;dr: poor college kid invests 5k in crypto last year, ends up with 875k short term gains for 2017, lost most of it in 2018, hasn't paid taxes or filed any returns yet

>EDIT: Yes, these were crypto-to-crypto trades (i.e. Bitcoin for Ethereum, Ethereum for Litecoin). These are considered taxable events from what I understand. At no point did I ever cash out to fiat and transfer any USD into my bank accounts from these tradings.

They want you to be a exemplar goy, paying for every little profit you make, yes even when you decide to cash out and your coin is on uniswap that transaction between xx coin to eth will be taxed, so if eth happens to grow like 0.5% during that time you will have to pay taxes on those 0.5%, literally a pain in the ass

>> No.22035152

Because of long term vs short term gains amd the fact that people with more than $50 in the market might not cash out all at once. How the fuck else would you determine gains on a partial cash out? Plus, it benefits you to determine if any gains are long term as they have a much lower gains tax. IF you cash out 100% then the gains IS essentially the net gain of all transactions...but people don't operate investments like this. They put $ in over time and draw money out incrementally. Its the way its done in america. Other places use avg base cost but the goal is the same. To LIMIT the amt of tax paid. Taxes arent confusing. If you can't figure them out might be better off just hodling. Ignoring proper tax accounting is nothing to fuck with.

This one has 50k supply meanwhile yfv has over 1 million, if yfv does a 2x and reaches 80-90$ it will be already almost at yfii levels of market cap while yfii is at 4k$, yfv doesn't have much left meanwhile yffi has like 10x less market cap than yfv and already well over yfv price, however yfv is as legit of a project as yfi and yfii, can't say the same about this one and the way to big prices will be the wildest ride ever with whales that bough at 1$ or less ready to dump their bags and then rebuy.
I don't see yfv price going below 15$ or over 150$ but i can see yffi price going below 20$ or over 5k

That is the flaw in that copypasta IMO. You are not taxed until you cash out. If you have a stock that you bought at a dollar, it jumps up to 1 million a share then back to a dollar, you are not taxed for the million you could have had. You are taxed for the dollar you cashed out for. The profits and losses of it going up and down are a wash.

Thats not the case there and you get taxed by crypto-crypto transactions, the guy didn't hold one coin and that coin happened to moon, hell he could have even hold just one coin all the way up to 800k and then he decided to move it to another coin creating the taxable event so he had to pay 20% of the gains made in that transaction so around 100k and 200k in taxes but he didn't cash out he then decided to put all thag money again into another coin and then it crashed and your portfolio is now 100k but you still have to pay those gains that you made before, even if you lost it all.
This could have been the best case for the guy but given the amount the probably made crypto-crypto transactions non stop all the way up and then lost everything, therefore 400k
