When you buy and sell a share, deposits are not in real-time. The only way to simulate real-time is margin. Also regulations, depends on the country.

That's not a long time.
I suspect a big junk of their short interest is bond holders hedging and I don't see anyone stepping in and ending their price suppression. Price could go back up a bit after they paid off their debt.
