Hi Mr Manager could I speak to you in your office?

Thanks, i'd like to discuss my employment with you. Currently I do these things for this amount of pay, but Ive been providing value in these ways and I believe it warrants a raise to this amount of money.

Fill in the blanks and have another job with better pay lined up so you can bounce if they say no.

Hey boss man you got a minute?
Walk in, shut door.
So, I really enjoy working here, but I'm barely getting by and would like to ask if there is any possibility of a raise.
Like I said, I really enjoy my job and feel like it's a good fit, but if I can't make ($xx,xxx) here I'm going to have to start looking elsewhere for employment.

They say no. You say you will continue doing your job to the best of your ability and will keep them updated on any changes.

They say yes. Do the same thing next year.

Even better, op can then file for unemployment and neet it up in style.

1) State your skills and why you deserve a raise
2) state there are other employers you will leave for that are offering you X, that you will likely leave for if you dont get X from your current employer

It's literally what I did last year. If they like you and/or you are hard to replace you easily pull it off.

They couldn't give me the 30% raise I wanted, but I got half of that and 4 days a week. No more fucking Fridays. kek

Of course it's not going to work if you're some grunt working at WalMart, but if you have power and you aren't easily replaceable you should be using that to get whatever you feel like you deserve.

Don't bother, I've tried it myself. Best is to just find another job and make them give you a counter-offer

Either your boss notices and gives you a raise or you'll find a better paying job.

just got a 40% salary raise, I had a job offer in hand and then announced to the company that I would leave, they made a counter offer and I stayed.
You can try that, or simply be blunt and ask for a raise. In my experience is always better to jump jobs though.

I don’t know if it can be adapted to a raise, but the shit sandwich I deliver when negotiating for starting salary goes like this: I love the company, and am excited to apply my talents to this role, and I really liked everyone I met, but the salary offered is less than I was expecting and is not on market (be prepared to back that up with references to comparable positions). I know it’s difficult for management to get meaningful increases once I’ve started (usually requires a promotion, and I work on a rigidly stratified industry—your title matters). I would hate to find myself in a job I love where my only option for getting market compensation is to find a job at a different company. So I think it’s important for us to get the number right at the beginning.
Do not accept one time on boarding payments in lieu of a higher salary and don’t believe any talk about bonus—bonus promises are rarely committed to writing, and a verbal promise is worth Jack shit. Your message to them is not that you want a raise—it’s that you want to get the number right so you are paid market comp, so you can focus on doing great work. There’s a way to talk about it so it seems like it’s their fault for taking away the joy you have for that job at that company working with those great people. Everything is perfect, but you can’t feel good about when you know you aren’t being paid commensurate with your experience/skill set. If you have a family, you have an obligation to them to ensure your earnings are fair. And if you don’t have a family, tell them you want one in the future and owe it to your unborn children to be financially responsible starting now. Good luck motherfucker.

Do you deserve the raise? especially in the middle of major cost cuts and oh a fucken pandemic? If the answer is yes then why?

Former middle manager here, if you came to me with FACTS as to why you deserved a raise and not because you've been with us for XXX years, then we can talk.

Workload increased? More responsibilities? Direct reports? Good luck

Unironically only when you have leverage
>Work in a department with like three people
>The person under me has like next to no idea what they're doing despite being here for almost 4 years
>Occasionally we'll get someone else so there's 4 but they don't last very long (what a shock)
>Don't even have to say anything
>Why anon you're getting a 10 percent raise on top of your annual review
>One time threatened to quit, didn't even have anything back up just bluffing
>The director almost broke down in tears and I really floated the idea for like a week
>They comprised so now I earn 100k and work from home full time
>Actually get another offer for the same deal
>Company keeps me on as a contractor

I am for sure number one on the shit list but I do like 20 hours worth of work a week for both companies

Does your company not do performance appraisals? We have them every year and based on our final score dictates what we get as a pay raise I usually get a measly 2%, except last year where I got a proper 1.40 raise instead. But the benefits are pretty alright for the shit raises I suppose.
