When I saw that Ari Juels co-wrote the whitepaper I watched a video of him presenting in 2016 at IC3 where he outlined "The five problems facing data hungry smart contracts" and basically laid the case for why Chainlink was a critical part of the wider infrastructure, before Chainlink was even a thing.
