If you're asking for specific plays like "Yeah, put $2k into x or y", I don't really have advice for you.

Let's say (you) have $15k. You're fairly certain something is going to moon or going to tank, right? It could be tempting to put 25% into it but don't. Put in maybe $500-$1k. At most that's all you will lose (Remember to set up trailing stop losses and pay attention to IV crush/theta.) Remember it's important to pull out of an option when it looks like you're at the apex of your gains as opposed to saying "I can make $3k off of this if x goes up $2 more before Friday!!) Consider that the upwards/downwards trend continues for the rest of the week. What does that look like? What does that look like if it does the same but in the exact opposite direction? What if it goes up 2 days and down 1? Weigh your options.

Take your 2x or 0.5x and get out if it's necessary. Doubling $500 gets you $1k. That's $500 extra. Just spam these tiny incrimental plays until you get to a point where losing $1k doesn't hurt. Imagine it feeling like you lost $10 or something. Just be careful to not get too desensitized into being okay with losses. So that might be like $30k or something. Don't be obsessed with doubling either.

Doubling $500 to $1k is awesome and doubling $5k to $10k is even better. Just consider the fact that turning $500 into $750 and $5k to $7k is also just as valid and infinitely more sustainable.

sure. remember at the end of the day i only care about making money, if im wrong and it loses money obviously i'd want to avoid using it if something else is better, or change my risk management or something. i enjoy being challenged on these things because the better i can defend my ideas the more validity they have and therefore the more profitable i should be, especially if i can eliminate some dumb ideas and replace them with better ones potentially.

but basically yeah the SD are going to change depending on the data set and mostly give you levels of extremes which are likely to have a correction. i think the time frame you use depends on the time frame you expect to trade on, i.e. how long you plan on holding a position, it should theoretically work on every time frame with any amount of data, you just have to understand what it's telling you about that data and where the extremes are.

Gotcha. Yeah, all I'm cautioning you about is the risk of overestimating the predictions the channels make. The way you've got them defined, they're always going to look like they're right, because the line is taking all the data in the series into account right from the start.

As an example, that graph of Kodak you posted with the spike at the far right side - looks like the channel gave you a near-perfect exit a 4 SDs, right? But if you had drawn those lines using only the data on the first half of the chart, your lines would've been significantly different: the width of the channel would have been much tighter, and the linear regression flat or even slightly negative. That would've led you to sell much sooner, since the break above your 4sd love would've been much closer to the regression line.

Consider switching to something like StandardDevChannel (close, 1.0, no, 100) and I think you'll see what I mean.

well it's not really 100, the way im using it normally is with "full range" on so for 5 m 5D it would use all of the candles for the entire data set. you can set it to less candles though like pic related.

i wouldn't really call it an exit for KODK, the way i look at it is that you'd scale in to a position through 2+ SD, and exit when it regressed to or near the mean. so you'd short some KODK on the way up at each level and cover when it dropped down into profit.

but also, like i said, i think it works better on a more "normal distribution" kind of stock that isn't going to make crazy moves like that out of nowhere. i guess it would depend on what the news was and whether you think that would merit the stock continuing in the extreme direction or not, or of course you could short fewer shares for less risk depending on volatility, or even just wait for momentum to reverse, say on the macd or some other momentum indicator (like waiting for the RSI to leave being overbought and probably going to 1m instead of 5m for the time frame to have more granularity).

you're right though in that im still experimenting with what data set to use for what time frame, like day or short-term swing trades. i've also been taking screenshots of stocks on different timeframes at different points of the day to see how the channels change. im thinking 5 days worth of data is probably pretty good for day trading currently for what levels you want to enter at and to get a better sense of the overall trend. like today was a great dip buying opportunity on AMD for example, i made a bit over a dollar per share trading it today.

no, more like at least regress to the mean of around $14-15, looking at the past 10 days worth of data for example. probably for these sorts of spikes it's better to look at larger time frames i'd imagine, but this should give you a good idea of where you are relative to the past 10 days. i'd probably be looking to short at $17, 18, and 19 if i could. but that's being said with absolutely no FA being done on my part, idk anything about the actual company in all fairness.

Ooh, that's an interesting graph. Didn't realize it would look like that, only giving the channels for the right-hand side, but it makes sense. I said 100 kind of arbitrarily - at 5m candles that's 12 candles per hour, so whatever timeframe makes sense.

But you're right that it works best on a normally distributed stock. I'd also say it works best on a flat stock, since the linear regression is only good if it keeps following it, and slope tends to be disproportionately influenced by the tails of the graph.

To test it, you really shouldn't make the graph for this week and see whether it looks like it would've worked. You should make the graph for last week, and then extend the same lines onto this week's graph. Or even the next day's graph. The point is that it'll always look valid until you test it against data that the line didn't have. I'm not sure how easy that is to do in ToS, though.

i'll look into it at least. currently im looking more into using the levels for bigger time frames so the data from the current day for daytrading doesn't influence it as much compared to the previous data. like if you only use 1 day then the current day is going to have a huge impact as it will wind up being ultimately half of the data by the end of the day, but 5 days or 10 days will likely give more viable levels of where the "extremes" are and what the general trend looks like. but there also needs to be some kind of balance because longer timeframes would imply that you might be holding it for longer (maybe even more than a day), but wider ranges mean you have more wiggle room in regards to how wide you cast your net with scaling into a position and how likely the price is to continue going against you before it corrects. it's why it is also probably safer to say you only take trades in the direction of the trend, so like maybe it's not a good idea to buy MU right now since it's getting to 2 SD on this graph but it's downtrending. also you might use FA and say "this is a good company so i want to use the SD to buy the dips, but i won't short it i'll only look for where i can go long".

it seems good in theory and has been working for me so far but im still in the process of experimenting with how to "optimize" it, especially for day trading or short-term swing trading (like 1-3 days).

Yeah, you're correct to worry about the time frame you choose having a big influence. For example, in the graph you posted: on the time scale given, you have a -2sd cross right at the end there. But if your timescale was only the last quarter of the graph, say the last two weeks, your linear regression would slope much more steeply downward, and the current price might be pretty close to the 'mean' right now. Likewise, notice that if you drew the lines using only the first half of the graph, the trend was much more flat, which would've given you that -2sd cross much earlier, some time last week.

If that's just a karma whoring fake, whatever.
If he just got lucky, good for him, I feel no negative emotions to watch other people make it, it's inspiring if anything.
Focus on yourself and you'll make it too. If he really cashed out that sum, he had to make SOME good decisions along the way.

I’d tell myself to stop wasting 16 hours a day playing morrowind while listening to classical music and jerking off

yeah which is why i say, it depends on what time frame you plan on taking a trade. obviously one on a time frame like 30 D 15m could last for a month or longer, but likewise the trading range would be larger and so ultimately too would be the gains once it reverted to the mean eventually. which is why i've been preferring to scale in and out regularly, when i scale in and usually take half off the table at some point usually based on the ATR, with an ultimate "target" and the option to buy more shares if it dips lower and then sell half again over and over. that way as the price keeps flucuating you're constantly locking in profits and averaging down within the trading range.

i do find it interesting looking at some of the pics i took. seems like the levels for 2 D 5m match pretty decently with 1 D 5m for AMD for example, so that might be a good place to look for levels to scale in at.

this is what i mean by "optimizing", because more or less im just looking for what levels i should be scaling into a position at for the day. i also usually just shoot for going through a series of trades once, especially on whatever morning spike or dump occurs, i don't overstay my welcome since it's harder to do if you're entering positions later in the day where you don't have as much time to wait. of course, if you were willing to hold overnight, that'd be different, but then you'd probably be looking at a 5 or 10 day chart instead of just 1-2.

Imagine reading something so true on Biz.

This is basically all investing is, but for some reason, everyone gotta make it 100x more complicated and turn themselves into dumb money (aka normies)

the main issue is that most people aren't investors or traders, but instead are gamblers. most don't realize that there's a lot of low-hanging fruit in the market, but no they gotta take the high risk high reward shit that usually blows up their account. that's the problem. most people don't have a strategy or any financial education they're just gambling on shit hoping it moons which 90% of the time it doesn't.
