Why do you guys think inflation is going to be the problem?

A bout of deflation from February through May caused “core” inflation as measured by the admittedly bullshit CPI to decline from a 2.4% year-over-year rate before the shutdown to just 1.2% in June. As demand for a number of deeply affected goods and services improved with the reopening of the economy, “core” inflation increased from May to June at a faster-than-expected 2.9% annualized pace, raising inflation concerns. But the gain was led by apparel and travel-related prices in a sharp reversal of particularly big declines during the shutdown and is unlikely to persist. I would imagine inflation will actually drop as the velocity of money is so low.

Open to being convinced otherwise.

inflationists are financially retarded and dont understand economics or the banking system
read how a central bank works before you listen to pinheads that talk about inflation, central banks are completely powerless today and have 0 impact on the real economy outside of influencing peoples psychology
central banks have been in a liquidity trap for the past decade
fucking qe this, liquidity injection that, asset purchase programs etc. none of it works and there hasnt been any inflation for over 10 years, the fed had to do qe 4 fucking times because it didnt do shit, if it really works than you dont need to keep doing it, they literally cannot create inflation anymore and are just playing with psycology at this point to get people to think that inflation is coming so that the react inflationary which will end up creating real inflation
the primary dealer banks have always called bullshit on the central banks ever since they started artificially surpressing rates which has made the central bank completely irrelavent in the banking system
just look at japan, 30 years of qe, app, insane b/s expansions and no inflation, because the primary dealer banks are refusing to play along with the central banks and dont transmite their policy to the rest of the economy so all this liquidity they create just ends up back at the banks and doesnt enter the real economy

I think you guys are oversimplying. Because of lagged effects from the shutdown shock, the trend in average hourly earnings growth appears sharply lower now compared to the pre-pandemic outlook. Distortions caused by the massive shift in the mix of wage earners
toward higher-wage workers during the shutdown as lower-paid service-shit vanished temporarily increased the average. As the economy opened and some of the lost service-sector jobs were recuperated, almost a half of this aberrant surge got erased by June, however, with sharp further weakening ahead imo. Such deceleration in wage growth would in itself be inconsistent with rising inflationary pressures for the foreseeable future. And helicopter money would have to be so high to compensate for that I don't think they'd be able to combat it. In addition, prospects for a strong reacceleration in productivity growth as the economy more fully opens up suggests suppressed inflation pressures over the next two years.

Even taking into account a continued gradual dollar depreciation, which would help nudge up the non-petroleum import-price index after a two-year downtrend, thus eliminating a key disinflation force the negative lagged effects on inflation from the collapse in consumer spending on services and its much slower recovery potential compared to the sharp “V-shaped” rebound already observed in durable-goods spending point to additional “core” inflation weakness as we go forward.

Well my over-arching concern for this thread, even as someone who hedges with gold myself, is that people are listening to very one sided arguments from - as you put it, people that don't understand economics or the banking system. I mean look at the recommendations for podcasts in the thread topic.

Basic investment strategy is having a bull and bear argument, and I only see bull arguments here. It's like a brainwashing has occurred.

Shifts in the mix of the consumer-spending basket can cause some prices to accelerate and others to decelerate, clouding the overall inflation outlook. I mean the Fed has not accommodated an increase in the general price index. For inflation to average below 2%, as it has during the past decade, some prices had to decrease when others increased, but I don't think we have the foundation for anywhere near what people are expecting here. I think we could even see short term deflation, followed by asset inflation.

>>21580950
Ramping up money supply does not equate to inflation necessarily, especially not in this economic climate. We for sure have some funny business going on within fiscal and monetary policy, and I do think we'll see asset inflation - but to catastrophic ends? I don't think so.

You aren't coming back with really any arguments. I was hoping to find some intelligent investors here, I guess you've all just been brainwashed by gold and silver dealer podcasts.

Stocks are at an all time high for now, but it's very likely that there will be a correction also. It's not atypical for stocks to have one last boom after the yield curve inverts. Historically after that happens, within 18 months, we see a correction.

To borrow schiffs autism in the matter: prices goes up and down, money supply inflates or deflates. There has been massive inflation. Prices may have stayed the same so far, but it could be that prices would have dropped dramatically without money supply inflation. Because money is injected via big banks, inflation has been causing price increases first and primarily in hard assets related to the financial sector (housing, stonks, PMs). Price increases for pleb goods are the 'second wave' effect of money supply inflation. These things take months and even years to happen, so i guess we will have to wait and see how it plays out.

Many people here holding gdx gdxj sil silj miner etfs, some also try to pick single miners for fun, like mux aunff etc, but etfs are safest. Miners are obviously undervalued against current spot, which seems like the market being run by dumb boomers who read Bloomberg and watch CNBC, who tell them that PMs will go back down any day now. But with the King of Boomer Investors recently bending the knee to gold, we'll see how it changes.

SILJ for example, is 15-16 and has OTM call options at 23 dollar strike. Well even at current silver prices it should already be there, if silver goes to 40-50 SILJ should do far beyond 2x. Miners can move dramatically and give big potential returns for degenerate gamblers... and you don't even need to touch gay, fraudulent "paper" metals schemes like SLV to make leveraged bets.

Gold in 1toz form is for large purchases, like vehicles and houses. There is a company making 24k foil fractional notes called goldbacks that could be an alternative in the future (smallest note is 1/1000th of an ounce of gold), but if we were to return to a gold standard, even 1/1000th of an ounce would probably be too big for small purchases like a cup of coffee.

Right now we are seeing deflationary movements even, the Fed has been unable to reach its 2% target. Ultimately inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon. Also, to your point, it is a long lagging indicator because it responds slowly to changes in economic conditions, which in turn respond with a lag to changes in monetary policy. Since it is the monetary-policy setting and the economic outlook it engenders that determine inflation, the pandemic induced setback in economic conditions is likely to continue to suppress inflation for some time (maybe a year and half or two years, historically speaking), when the fuller effects of the stimulus and more advanced economic recovery start to be felt. In other words, the inflation outlook over the next year or two is somewhat baked in the cake.

For inflation to get back up just to the 1.5% to 2% range by late 2021 it would take a big, immediate drop in uncertainty levels, a sharp dollar depreciation (at least down to the 2018 level on a dollar trade-weighted index basis), and much stronger consumer spending/economic growth than currently appears likely. Otherwise, while the inflation trend should turn up as 2021 progresses as a result of the fiscal and monetary backstop to date, “core” inflation is likely to remain below the Fed’s 2% target well into 2022.

While Fed policy concerns me, without the massive fiscal and monetary stimulus to date, the recent dip into deflation territory, with its destructive effects on corporate revenues growth, economy wide debt-servicing ability, and financial conditions would have persisted, eliminating any chance for a swift recovery. The pickup observed in the TIPS implied inflation expectations, rising metals prices, uptick in consumer inflation expectations, and positive financial-market signals (narrowing credit spreads, rising equity prices) continue to corroborate the view that the stimulus is working to combat deflation concerns.

Look for opportunities to DCA on physical and maintain calm and perspective. If you are in miners, you must have a long-term view. Only a very experienced hi-freq trader should be day trading this market. If you are a swing trader, you may do well too, but only if you are experienced. When you short something, you're betting on the price to go down, otherwise you take losses. By bringing the price of silver down, they'll be able to take minimum losses when they change their positions to calls.
Does this make sense?

I bet they can automate the whole supermarket in a few years literally even automating the shelve stocking.

If self driving cars get really good we dont even need drivers anymore for distribution of goods. Many factory jobs are also getting automated.

If people only had to work for luxury and had basic food /shleter and medical care wouldnt that be great?

Yes, of course, I know that.
But the thing is they already have big short positions. And making new shorts to get the price down to get out of their original shorts is obviously a good thing. But shorts have to be covered by buying, which drives price up again, so they will be fucked when trying to get out of their new shorts. It's like an evil cycle, why not just cover their shorts at whatever price and go long now? The shorts clearly don't even work anymore, the price drops massively for like 30 minutes and then is back up the next day.

I still tell most people to buy GDXJ and SILJ at any rate, because, unlike in the case of the mainstream ETFs, the companies in them are still vastly undervalued, like First Majestic, Yamana Gold, etc.; and people who invest in small-caps without understanding the mining industry are liable to get wiped out. So I'd rather risk somebody panic-selling an ETF at a time like this, and realizing a 4% loss, than panic-selling a small-cap mining stock, which might go down 50% one day, and be up 100% the next.

>There must be a way to achieve some kind of automated basic income world

It's called post-scarcity and it is incredibly complex. The 'developed world' takes essentials of life for granted because they are so widely available, but much of the world (both geographically and per capita) is still struggling with the basics.

We're not getting there within any of our lifetimes. The only way for it to happen is to have an entire manufacturing and supply chain fully automated: harvesting the most basic resources (iron, sand, stone, oil, wood, rice, wheat, etc); refining them; manufacturing/assembling tools, parts and machinery (and particularly being able to manufacture and repair the very machines needed to harvest resources and manufacture the machines); delivering/distributing them; etc. The system also would need to intelligently and automatically scale up and down based on changing human need/consumption, to prevent excess waste of natural resources but also keep up with increasing demand.

That implies that post-scarcity must last forever, which I don't think is true, or suggests that we must or will continue to grow the human population at current rates and thus need an infinite amount of matter/energy to sustain the growth. I think one of the key requirements for post-scarcity is to stop population growth, and actually hold the global population at a level much lower than it is currently at.

If post-scarcity can last for 5000 years, isn't that "enough" to say that it has been achieved, even if it falls apart eventually? The smaller the human population, the longer post-scarcity can last even if limited to the resources available on earth, and if post-scarcity on earth is achieved for a long enough period of time then harvesting resources from space also becomes feasible, which would extend the total duration even further.

There's a reason that almost every steady-state tribal society practiced infanticide.

You can have post-scarcity, the cost is mandatory contraceptives for welfare recipients.

good points, i think eventually we will encounter some form of mass extinction event that will reduce the pop either natural or man made. major question being will the planet be totaled in the process from nuclear exchange? countries arent going to just stop existing anymore based on a threat, theyre gonna set off some fireworks for the hell of it i think.

post scarcity is synonymous with post struggle.

A civilization smart enough to automate everything to the point where they dont have to do anything will quickly devolve into a civilization unable to maintain itself.

Right now we are a prime example of this happening.

because it is. it's not the primary problem, but it's one of the core driving reasons why bonds give you negative purchasing power (though a positive nominal yield); see: https://www.longtermtrends.net/real-interest-rate/
blue line negative? metals good. period.
