the legal option is to buy an existing model in the US that was in service and has been maintained since it was built.

with relatively new guns like the M-16 A1 service rifle this is about $30,000. For wwii models you're looking at over $100k for a working version, and you can't have any felonies on your record. The FBI has to sign off on you owning it.
