Out of curiosity since I’ve never looked at CDs before, I took a look at the interest rates on CDs at Bank of America. Question for /smg/:
I was a total doomer and too wrapped up in apocalyptic thinking back in March to make any money. Assuming another large dip/crash will take place, how easy was it for you guys to sell early and then rebuy when things were super low? I'm a poorfag but have around 10k in cash in my account, but am scared I won't be able to time things right and might be better off just waiting til it happens and buying. What do you think?

I'm relatively new to the stock video game and let me tell you, you're undoubtedly going to be emotionally attached to your positions for at least a year. The only way you'll get to the point where you're detached from your wins and losses is through experience. Sorry to break it to you, but when you start to see green or red in your account your heart will undoubtedly start racing. Maybe if you're colourblind you'll do a bit better at the start, lol. Just dive in, try, emphasis on "try" to set hard rules to your positions and stick to them. Over time you'll get an understanding of what is a pump or a legitimate, sustained run up in stock value. I lost the chance to profit off a 400% profit position in a wsb meme stock because I thought it would continue going up after the earnings report (ER). It didn't go up and I got off with only 1k in losses, which was 5% of my account value. You're going to take a beating, its only a matter of time before it happens.

ALT made me money though only 100% because I didn't predict corona-chan driving them up 20000% but that's because I understood that their flu vaccine was actually a viable candidate to supplement or even replace current ones based on the actual reports on how it was doing in trials.
But yea, most biopharma start ups are either scams or long-shots.

I'm pretty sure a healthy amount of /smg/ actually liquidated and went all cash in mid March. It was scary. That obviously wasn't the right play in hindsight.

/biz/ is weird in that it's filled with shitcoin pajeet scams but LINK is undoubtedly /biz/'s #1 lovechild right now and.. it's doing pretty good actually. Very pleasantly surprised.

/smg/ as a whole also does pretty well in my opinion minus the obvious retarded plays like KTOV and NAK since most people can't get out of those on time.

/smg/ got me into EV early on (BLNK, CLSK, NIO, WKHS) and non-meta tickers early on (LL, HD, LOW, TSMC) as well. Thanks guys!

I had a great exit on equities before the drop. Unfortunately I also had a 2x long on oil at the time, based on the idea that saudis and russians would make emergency production cuts to prevent the oil price from collapsing. Instead they both played games and I took the brunt of -30% before I could run away from the position screaming. All settled now though. I recovered from that and then some in the following months.

Depends on timing. Many stocks only have monthly options, so youd have to sell a month out, and if its closer than a week, its probably not worth selling the call. If you don't plan on exiting a position for a while, then its a good strategy. I like to sell weekly covered calls so I can adjust to the market more often, but it also takes more work and fewer stocks offer weekly options.

Because even if it does go above strike it may not get executed, and then you'll still have the shares. Depending on price volatility and risk tolerance you might come to a point where you're at a loss and premiums are only really worth a shit ITM, profiting meaningfully means setting strike at a value below cost-basis. Also if you want the ability to let a stock run you're fucked, and your strike suddenly turns into a massive realized upside loss.

Ok class POP QUIZ:

you bought 100 shares of SLV at 20$/sh
SLV is now 25$/sh and you wish to exit position
instead of just selling the shares, you write a covered call

>> No.21426016

You write for whatever strike you're comfortable with, that's not something we decide for you

The only thing that's certain is that if I wanted to exit ASAP I'd write for a strike pretty close to the current price, on a green day, to guarantee more premium, weekly for Friday, at least a week or two in advance

If you want to sell it now, I would just sell it.

If you don't care about when you sell, just wait for a green day and sell a call. If you like, you can just buy it back on the next red day.

If you want to sell it in a week, look up the next weeks options (if it has weeklies), then calculate the average weekly movement for the last few weeks, then apply that to the current price to get a strike price. Weekly movement = 4%, then 25*1.04=26. So you sell a 26 strike call expiring the end of next week.

If you want to sell a month out, then look at the average weekly gains for the last few months and use that to extrapolate to next month. Average week was 4%, so 4*4=16%, 25*1.16, 25*1.16=29. So you sell a 29 strike call a month out.

Just remember if you want to sell NOW you will have to buy back your call first.

Yeah, or that "upside loss" corrects, and suddenly you're below cost basis and you have to bide your time and deal with the liquidity issues or hold a naked call. Or you sell yourself 30% short. Or it doesn't hold high enough above strike and buyer holds to expiry and then it corrects.

There's a reason you collect a premium.

Oh, I also forgot to mention you can adjust the strike based on what you think might happen.
If you think its more likely to go down, then you can sell closer to the money for a larger premium. So if you were going to sell for 29 but think it will perform under the average, then you can sell at 28 or 27.
If you think it will rocket, or you still want to keep the stock, then you sell farther out of the money. So if you were going to sell at 29, then you can sell at 30 or 31.

Alternatively, you can completely lock your sell by selling in the money (below the current market price). So unless the stock goes down, you will almost certainly be exercised, as well as a higher chance of being exercised early. (Normally stocks are not exercised early because the time value of the option is higher than the current price, but in the case of in the money options, there is far less time value)

This is like baby versions of explanations, so do your own research.

Contrary to the recent downwards price movements in SLV, you actually believe SLV has some room to run up to 30 again within the next 2 months. You're not in a rush to sell and you want to get as much $$ as you can from both the share price increase + your premium from the option

But thanks to the upcoming Apple split you get a chance to go back to 2014 when apple was "cheap" and relive the glorious gains once again. And not suffer any fuckups in the process. Some may scoff and question it. But history is the guide. Apple did this before; a 7:1 split when the share price was over 600 per. Now what's the price again today? 460 something.. For those driving without Autopilot but with our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 2.27 million miles driven. For those driving without Autopilot and without our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 1.56 million miles driven.
