So if I bought say a $15m yacht at that 90m size range, say 5 or 6 years old, they say it usually costs around 10% of the new purchase price of the yacht in operating costs each year right? How much of that could I reasonably expect to recover by chartering the yacht out? I know I'd be making a big loss on it each year in running costs and depreciation, just want to get an idea of the magnitude.

Also if you got a 30m yacht, they say this is the maximum size you can possibly operate without crew, just with family and friends. Is this actually a good idea? I guess if I chartered it out I'd hire crew for a smaller yacht also

I could go through operating/maintenance costs for the yacht I’m on just now for the past year and see. This one is owned by a billionaire and there’s genuinely, millions paid in our engineering department alone. And we only do one season per year. I don’t have a yacht yet and I don’t sail, I’m just an engineer who fixes shit. But I’m pretty sure you’ll need a yacht masters ticket for anything over 10m. The small boat licence isn’t that difficult to get I don’t think. You just do a couple driving courses and it allows you to drive a boat up to x amount of metre. I think for 25m you’d need a good amount of sea time and extra certs. Definitely doable and I’ll be doing it also cause I want a sail boat around that size. Should be good cause I’ll know about the mechanical/electric side and I can get my yacht master licence to be able to drive it.

There is emergency breakdowns and stuff. But you need to hang around close to ports. You also won’t be able to go more than certain miles outside the coastline if you don’t have a correct licence. Shit like that.

Extremely easy to get. It's an 8hr course. Ours covers jetskis too or personal water craft (PWC) license.
The coast guard teaches for free sometimes at local colleges. Navigation and rescue it's good to take advantage of.

That's kinda the flaw of the yacht plan though. If they request to board, you cant deny them. So if you at home doing hookers and blow and cops knock you dont have to answer, but if your on a yacht doing hookers and blow and the gaurd wants on you have to let them.
