If I want to actually make some money in stocks and I only have like $3000 invested, should I be trying to find medium-to-long term holds and hope they pull like 15%+ or should I be doing shorter term swings where I take profits earlier and reinvest more often?

You're absolutely correct. I don't go in with all of my portfolio and always turn gains from the $50k collateral into a wheel for AMZN/TQQQ.

If all else fails, I'll pull some AMZN RSUs. If I manage to hit 7 figures on my wheeling account, I'll up the spread collateral to $100k. So I guess you can say I'm writing the spreads with 10% of my portfolio at all times and offloading any realized gains into the non-spread side of my portfolio.

These positions work out.. until a black swan event happens and they don't work out. I've had a few burns before on stocks I didn't fully understand (GLD, SLV) so I'm sticking to what got me here. Here are some pretty risky spreads I wrote a few weeks back for entertainment purposes.

I usually start with setting up a scalp (usually shortly before and ex div date ) on some shares, if I don’t get a fill then I aim to scalp the dividend, and if I don’t get filled quickly enough Or if it goes down I’ll add some shares to dollar cost average and sell a call close to or above the average trade price of my shares.

What are your current positions right now? The recommendations people can make vary vastly depending on your current portfolio size. People are more prone to recommend risky plays if your current portfolio is say, less than your yearly income versus 5 years of your yearly income.

Correct. I take into account % below current price as well but I found out that the market makers for high liquidity stocks.. they know what's up. They're up to something. And the numbers determined by the collective mindset of the market which consequently determines the bid-ask spreads are a better indicator of where the stock will move, rather than the actual current price itself. As a result, I focus on x% of collateral first, then look at if the strike range is reasonable enough before writing the spreads. This includes stuff like RSI, moving averages, and of course - current world news, earnings, upcoming IV crushes or spikes.

And then after THAT, I start hunting for bid-ask spreads with anomalies on less popular strikes then target those to eek out additional x% on collaterals. A great one is AMZN, GOOG, AAPL. People will vega hedge across all types of strike prices on these and you can ride their action.

Closing early historically yields better results than holding through expiration due to black swan events being capable of blowing people out. There was a study I read somewhere that had a sample size of like, 50000 plays and it was better to take profit after getting like 20-25% of the initial premium instead of riding it out til the end because of the losses here and there that can blow out dozens of smaller gains.

On those spreads, I don't remember exact math but that TSLA $1350/$1290 spread is 4 contracts.

If TSLA goes to any price below $1350, I have to buy it from them at $1350, so that's minus $135,000. But I also bought a $1290 put, letting me sell it at $129 each, so that's plus $129,000 pretty much. So for each contract, I can lose up to a maximum of $60 times 100 ($6,000). With four contracts, that's $24,000.

But I get paid a premium up front to write these put spreads. For me that was roughly $8,000 - so I got paid 33% of my total maximum loss collateral to write these. Which means the maximum I can actually lose is $16,000 of the $24,000 required for the play. The best case scenario is +$8,000 if TSLA ends up above $1350 and and the worst case scenario is -$16,000 if it ends up below $1290. Anything in between depends on the price it ends up at. I like to close them out manually if the price is too close for comfort the day before expiration. Usually the strikes are far out enough that I don't need to do this. Most of the time though, the theta decay reduces the value of both options as it gets closer to expiration which makes it even more likely to win the bet for strikes very unlikely to be breached.

Bullion banks are still trying to short it. Shenanigans until September, likely around the next comex silver delivery date. Shorts lose the more actual delivery is desired instead of cash settlement. Absolutely massive future options contract volume in September.
Silverbug memers think the SHTF scenario is a collapse of the paper market resulting in a force majeure for silver. Then all hell will break loose for all commodities out of misplaced fear.

Cool thanks for the explanation. I did something like this once but ran away in fear. Had something like $310/307.5 put credit spread back in 2019. Didnt really fully understand it. Got freaked out as i dont fully trust robinhood to properly execute a position like that. They expire same day, one is a buy the other is a sell and they've let me risk more than my account had in it due to the credit.

Advice on doing this with 35k? I mainly only touch regular 1 way options rather than spreads.

If SPY went above $330.10 the next day (Friday, 7/24), I would stand to lose all $45,000.

SPY was $322 on Thursday, and had been on a downward trend from a previous high. We hadn't had a >$4 upward movement in a single day since the original June runup on vaccine news, and even then it ran up $8. Of course, that's a larger percentage since SPY was 311 then. But that made no difference to me. So I wrote 450 contracts for a credit of $0.10 per share and came out on top as all the calls expired worthless.

Bruh I had a girlfriend that I was with for like 2 years and I ended up moving 4 hours away and even though we saw each other every weekend I'd pick her up and she'd sleep over she STILL cheated on me. Once I found out from lookin at her phone (and snapping it in half instantly from my sperg rage) I dumped her but she begged and said it was a mistake cause she was coked out and just happened once. Anyway I ended up dumping her for good like a month or two later after I told her I fucked some fresh 18 year old tinder pussy and she took an uber all the way to my place and I told her to gtfo and she left screaming.. fun stuff but yeah moral of the story is like another anon said you're gonna get cucked. Unless you guys are planning to move in then it's not worth pursuing. Unless the sex is like amazing or something then Idk maybe its work getting cucked. My ex did give amazing head.. but yeah couple months dating.. 4 hours apart.. not gonna work my man.. remember that HE canceled and she just said she was GOING to cancel on him.. but where is this guy at? Commodities contracts are binding agreements for both parties to buy/sell a commodity at a fixed price at a set date. This is different from stock options which only hold the option writer to the terms of the contract at the whims of the option buyer.
Silver is notoriously over-prescribed on paper. Where hundreds of people all hold pieces of paper laying claim to the same physical silver. SHTF if a small proportion of paper holders (including futures contract buyers) actually demand the physical metal the paper is supposed to correspond to. If you are trying to short these contracts and suddenly you need to deliver a lot of actual silver (and not cash settle it), you are in serious legal and financial trouble. This would be Force Majeure although not from an act of God but because you basically exposed yourself to holding a contract you could not fulfill your obligations to.
I am not quite sure how Comex deals with it since those charters are fucking boring to read but probably you'd have to settle at any price you could get the physical silver for. And if that happens the price of silver will spike from MMs front running short idiots caught in this position forcing them to pay absurdly high premiums so they can actually get the silver to deliver. Then afterwards the futures contracts for silver will be so volatile from distrust and fear that who the hell knows if it would be worth anything.
That would probably cascade to temporary mania with ALL commodities and people would start hoarding out of fear that corn, platinum, rice, coffee, etc. could be next. Irrational, but that is the market. This is, of course, peak metal doomer theory.

>>21332562
If you have 35k and you can't afford to lose it, stay away from spreads altogether. You're better off either doing covered calls (buying 100 shares of a stock you don't mind holding long term then collecting bits of premium along the way) or running the wheel (getting paid a premium to "buy" a stock at a "discount" if the stock price drops, but something you actually don't mind holding for a long time in the case you get assigned the put to buy the stock.)

So an example for this would be something like QQQ, TQQQ, or AAPL (post-split).

Example here, TQQQ 8/14 $115 put was $2.47 on close yesterday. This was when TQQQ had a massive correction yesterday along with the rest of the tech sector. For every $11,500 of collateral you had, you could've promised to buy TQQQ at $115 on 8/14 if it stayed below that price. And you would've been paid $247 to do so. That's 2.14% of the required collateral. And if TQQQ has a positive run-up? You keep that 2.14%. Sure, you could've bought the actual stock and had it run up say, 4%. But would you have sold to lock in that 4%? Or are you the type to hold it hoping it goes to 8% gains and then feeling bad when it crabs back down to say, 1%.

And let's say TQQQ does drop to $113. You still got paid $2.47 per share to buy it at $115. So in theory you bought the stock at $112.53 each. And if TQQQ has a green run up back to $115, you made that premium back already. And you can proceed to promise to sell those shares at say, $120 and get paid something like $2.47 per share again. And you know what, you're still happy if TQQQ goes to $122.47 since your average cost theoretically was $112.53 each and you sold those shares at $122.47. Gains are gains.

It's only recently where i have sold to lock in profits even if i only own a few shares.

I can afford to risk it. I hate wagecucking. I want freedom from it and for my dear family (siblings and parents, so it's not like I'm risking a wife or child's wellbeing only mine), not slave away for half a century for me or them. So I don't have much of a choice but to risk it, if I win we're free, if I fail the government will bail me out like all the old boomers who are poor but only when I'm old. I mean its a mess because, outside of oil (uranium is too regulated), silver is the most manipulated commodity on the exchanges. Shorts can make a lot of money slamming it down like they did the past 48 hours and they can keep playing that game against longs as long as everything is overwhelming handled with cash settlements.
However, if you think the shorts are going to expose themselves to a once in a generation bleed out, then you can make even more money by their overexposure. The desire for physical delivery determines which side wins and that is determined by a bunch of factors (10 year treasuries, VIX, fed policy, gold/silver ratios, whatever). Silver is famously volatile and it is going to be even moreso than what you have seen the past few weeks in September.

Oh I see, you saw a great opportunity and jumped in with a short time frame. In general at what point do you usually jump out? A certain percentage gain or until expiration?

>12%-15%
Just how much do you willingly risk of your entire portfolio to do this strategy. You dont need to say a dollar value just a percentage would be fine.

Eg.
Your account is $40k
You risk only $20k in collateral
Thus you risk only 50%
Albeit with a median gain of 13.5%, if I could pull that off 3 months in a row with nust just 25k I'd quickly reach over 100k. More so with 35k.

Just trying to get an idea as there are stocks I wouldn't mind doing this on. Just a bit to get my feet wet.

Just remember, you can come back with 50%, but you can't come back from 0%. Start making some smaller plays with new strategies, but educate yourself first obviously. People hate learning about "the greeks" and just like to look at charts. People hate reading the news. People hate putting in time. If you truly want to escape the cuckery, don't listen to not just others, but also listen to yourself in your own education.

The dumbest fucking thing I did before getting into stocks was literally reading about all 500 fucking companies on this retarded ass list. I don't recommend it. But that's what I did.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_S%26P_500_companies

Education, trial & error will get you to the top. But only if you learn from every play you make instead of clicking a few buttons then watching the line go up and down. Learn why it went up or down. Good luck friendo..

>There was a study I read somewhere that had a sample size of like, 50000 plays and it was better to take profit after getting like 20-25% of the initial premium instead of riding it out til the end because of the losses here and there that can blow out dozens of smaller gains.
Mathematically it's better to close them out after gaining 20-25% of the initial premium just to be safe since one huge bad play can blow out multiple smaller winnings. But then again, I trust in megacaps like AAPL to not swing down 10% in a single day even on massive selloff days like we saw in March.

Initially I risked 50% of my entire portfolio until I made enough wins where that initial 50% became 10% of my portfolio. Now I consistently write spreads with 10% of my portfolio and run the wheel on the other 90%. Any gains I make from that 10% I roll over into the wheel. I will say that the gains from that 10% of my portfolio is usually bigger than the gains I make from the wheel.

Think of a median gain of even say, 5% a week on safe plays on megacap like AAPL or GOOG. With a starting capital of 50% of your folio (17.5k), that's 221k in 52 weeks. As long as you don't blow ALL of it out, and start getting a better feel for plays (ie. taking 8% collateral plays on positions you're 100% sure on versus taking 3% collateral plays instead since you are having a hard time reading the market) you won't blow out your earnings on bad plays. Winning consistently, regardless of 1% or 7% is key. You don't aim to get 5% on every play, you aim to get 2% here, 7% there, 10% there, 1% here. But never a negative %.

Yeah I learned about the greek symbols for stocks like a month ago. They only seem reliable on high liquidity options or in rarer cases for low liquidity/low volume options when the stock moves hard.

Lmao reading all that. I think i attempted something similiar but for the purpose of picking stocks before i got bored and just picked what piqued my interest.

One last question.

Say you have 10 put credit spreads on spy.
>330 sell put
>329 buy put

If the stock closes at 329.5 what exactly happens? You dont have enough money to buy that many shares and i assume robinhood wouldnt hand it over to the other person. So what exactly happens?

Alternatively what happens when it closes at 320? How does the brokerage grabs the other persons shares and hand it to the other person if you clearly dont have enough funds to even afford that many?

These 2 questions are what scared me off the most.

If it looks risky, Robinhood closes the spread at like 2:45pm. Robinhood fucked me over on a spy spread once like this, actually. At 2:45 it was below max profit, so Robinhood closed it, and I lost 600. About 20 minutes later, the price of SPY skyrocketed above the max profit price. If Robinhood hadn't touched it, I would have been up 300.

But you should never be coming that close anyway. I was definitely mad, but it was my fault in the end. My lesson there was to prioritize safety over premium. Focus on safety

Those are very valid questions. And you don't want to be put in that position which is why closing things out early is recommended (by most) even if it means you don't get the full premium.

If it closes at 329.5, two things will happen.
You will be assigned the 330 put. But your 329 buy put will expire worthless after the options exchange clears everything. So what happens now?

If you're using Robinhood, if your options are so close to being assigned, Robinhood will try to dispose of the spreads at market value about an hour before actual expiration to try and reduce the pin risk.

What is pin risk?
https://www.investopedia.com/terms/p/pinrisk.asp#:~:text=Pin%20risk%20is%20the%20risk%20of%20an%20option%20seller%20holding,wipe%20away%20their%20expected%20gains.

When you are assigned the 330 put, but the stock closes at 329.5, your 329 put will expire worthless. This means that you are forced to cover the 330 put by "buying" the shares at market price on open the next day. Robinhood does not like that since the stock can move overnight to something like 310. When that happens, you are stuck with shares at 330 but are unable to sell at 329 since the move happened overnight to 310, after the 329 put expired. This puts you at a loss of $20 per share instead of the $1 you had hoped for. This is pin risk. Robinhood hates this happening so they will just close out your position (even at a loss) if it's this close to being assigned ITM. So your ideal situation, as stupid as it sounds, if you're using Robinhood, is just closing it out a bit early.

Then again, if your put spread is so close to being broken through, you've made a bad play and you can afford to close it out for a tiny loss.

Basically what I'm saying is, if it's between the strikes, just close that shit out. It's not worth the trouble. If it blows past your lower strike, well then you just take the maximum collateral loss. No pin risk expected.

Reading this again.. I don't think you looked at his posted closely enough. He has puts, the reading that I've done says the chart is about to reverse downward. He wouldn't want to sell his puts if that were the case, unless if I am reading this wrong

I could be wrong, because I have flux on and I'm tired, but it looks like it is just a heavily HDRed picture, not a render

Honestly in this fucked up time now a total market fund (VTI/VTSAX/SWTSX) may be the safest play of all. When no one knows what's gonna happen next. So far this year my SWTSX has brought me a 15.99% gain, which even in a more steady time is damn good. All I've done is tossed money in on good dips (tossed in a big load during march)

Thanks both of you. So basically if robinhood screws up there is always the possibility that
>i am forced to somehow take shares i cannot afford
>stocks dumps harder after the buy put becomes worthless
Correct?

So in essence just CLOSE IT OUT!

As i know robinhood has pulled some shady stunts (naked buy calls when it generally puts a warning and doesnt allow it).
