go back to reconsider fundamentals.
Tell me how you expect SMIC to actually reach the bleeding edge competition? Less and less people want to deal with China because they blatantly steal IPs, they've ended up isolating themselves from the west. ASML does not want to deal with China (not Taiwan). Semiconductors is much more complicated than you think that TSMC does not give a shit about China trying to copy their tech (how do you think you can copy semiconductors lol), never mind even obtaining the EUVL equipment from the west in the first place.
SMIC's only option right now is immersion lithography, which Intel has been doing. It has *inherent* flaws and Intel insisting on immersion lithography instead of moving on to EUVL (which they have no problems obtaining actually, pretty sure they already got some equipment from ASML) is exactly what caused intel to lose to AMD and have to outsource to TSM now to at least get a stalemate with AMD and stop bleeding too much market share.

TSM doesn't have a lot of upside since it's a manufacturer, and increases in production takes years to build, but it's still your best (along with ASML) if you want to increase your position in semiconductors. It'll probably just crab 90% of the time though.

mind you this isn't something you can just dump money in, competition at the very top with this semiconductor shit can easily can turn billions of dollars to waste if you mess up. It's why GlobalFoundries dropped out of the race. TSM is amazing at it because the Taiwan government has basically turned their entire country into the semiconductor industry. TSM gets massive support. Sure you could argue the CCP is trying to the same with SMIC, but they are lacking the western connections (e.g. EUVL equipment) that Taiwan has.

what else am i forgetting?

i should add though, not a bad idea to diversify into SMIC if it gets cheaper. Personally I was turned off by the fact that it was OTC (not eligible in a TFSA, and I dont wanna pay taxes on my stocks) that I didn't even bother to play it, and i certainly didn't think it would pump like +100% (well it dumped a lot now though).

really risky though given the geopolitics shit right now. TSM meanwhile thrives with the US-China tensions (unless of course China goes apeshit and actually attempts to invades Taiwan), after all, I think it would have been less likely for TSM to get a US subsidy if not for the tensions.

the powers that be wants nothing more than the wealth brought by exploiting cheap chinese workers. trump was never supposed to win 2016, the powers that be fucked up, and he is causing many rich people to lose a lot of money in his effort to bring back manufacturing to the US.

trump's been under fire by a lot of powerful people since day one if you hadn't noticed and this year they've stepped it up with impeachment, complete lies in the media, censorship and riots that they don't want to end. with all the shit he has been forced to deal with it's surprising that trump has achieved all the things he has while in office, and more surprising he still has the morale to run for another 4 years. i think he really wants to help the country he loves, if he wanted to he could be living out his last years in peace on some beautiful island somewhere.

dude lol, you didn't actually say anything about semiconductors and just said a blanket statement about chinese espionage, which btw is exactly why china is getting isolated and fucking itself over.

there are two major processes to making semiconductors. Immersion lithography and EUVL. China would be bringing a miracle to the world if SMIC really found out how to make it 7 nm (as they've claimed to have) work without EUVL.

Or are you telling me that China somehow has their hands on EUVL equipment AND they will be able to reverse engineer this fast enough to be worthwhile? What do you think these EUVL shit even is? Do you understand how many ASML even makes per year and to what customers?

The more tree huggy grocery stores in my area have switched to some kind of compostable. These are usually polylactic acid material, polybutylene succinate, and a certain type of cellulose. They may or may not require oils, solvents, etc directly in manufacturing (however manufacturing itself always requires oil in some capacity no matter what the product is). I looked in to investing in these compostable plastics when local grocery store started using them. There didn't seem to be a particular publicly traded company for it at the time. I should check again.

All that ramble aside, oil is never going away. Demand will always be high. You need it for EVERYTHING. Talking about EVs, you wanna build an EV? You need a bunch of stuff that uses oil to make that happen.

read the fucking article the original poster posted, it even alludes to some of the points i made. The tensions are real and even the article alludes to the fact that EUVL equipment is being denied to China. Everyone is tired of China's bullshit. These EUVL equipment aren't some tiny pieces of shit, they're worth like quarter billion each and ASML selling a dozen of them was a record sale.

it's amazing how little you guys actually understand about semiconductors despite how fucking memed TSM is around here. Here i thought i might get some useful thoughts from you, but it turns out i was talking to clueless bandwagoners all along. im fucking done lol, go ahead and gamble your money in CCP semiconductors to prove me wrong.

Two and a half noob questions.
1. Using one of the 0 fee trading brokers (Fidelity), is there *any* downside to buying and selling frequently/rapidly, other than the risk of selling lower than you bought?
For instance, if I buy 5 shares of something, and it goes up by $1 30 minutes later, and I sell 5 shares right then, did I make a pure profit of $5? Or is there some downside to this, like extra taxes or some shit?
I've only done long-term investing in mutual funds and stuff where there's less risk of small incremental fees and stuff because there's not a lot of transactions. But I just got a bunch of extra cash that I want to play with as a hobby, so I'm trying to do so in a way that won't completely burn myself.
2. Is there a way to short sell on an online trader?
2b. Assuming a stock that moves up and down over time but remaining generally flat, is it possible to ride the waves by simultaneously buying and short selling -- relinquishing each when its advantageous? I did this in an intro to finance class and the professor thought I was weird.

A key thing you're missing is this - the semi industry already moves fast. China can copy schematics, they can copy layouts, they can copy fab recipes, they can copy test routines & firmware, but they CAN'T copy understanding, and that is crucial to being able to actually do useful things for customers. Semiconductor companies ALREADY account for their competitors trying to out-engineer or out-price them, China is just a more unscrupulous competitor that isn't bound by the law.

I don't doubt China will gain further expertise, but it's not like other manufacturing fields where they can just quickly grok some boomer process that hasn't changed in 50 years, pay former subsistence farmers like $1 a month to do the same thing but cheaper, and drive everyone else out of business. They'll have to actually learn what they're doing, and that takes a lot more time than CTRL+C/CTRL+V.

Ok, so I'd make a profit of $5 - (5 * 0.15)

No, the real answer is real rates of return on T-Bills near zero or NIRP will face real ZIRP. Daddy powell said so. Yeilds are going to be pushed down by banks and insurance corps while kosher inflation grows over target. Where do you go? Reits (risky in this contraction), corp bonds (rates still pathetic for risk), undervalued equities, Gold, Silver, commodities, and finally over valued equities. And likely in that order.

So I'm actually a tax accountant but I'm not an income tax accountant, so I don't know a true answer as your income rate. What i can factually tell you is that if you hold long term 366 days or more you'll pay the 15% cap gains rate, whereas if you trade in time less than that you will be subject to the federal and state rates of your bracket. A cursory Google search tells me that slightly over 40k is 22% in USA. That answers your tax specific part of the question. To further advise you though you should really look up the rules for PDT. Pattern day trading classification is a big limiter. You must maintain 25k or more in order to freely day trade without penalty otherwise you're allowed 3 day trades (opening AND closing a position) in a rolling 5 day period. When you hit 4+ you get classified as PDT

sorry, to answer your other question, yes you're only taxed on gains. To truly understand your risk of taxability you also need to understand the "wash rule". So for instance I would like to provide an example, you enter a position in AAPL. You purchase 1000 dollars worth of AAPL, and you decide to sell it at any point during the future. Let's say you make a nice 20% and sell for 1200. If you re enter AAPL or any other company substantially deemed to be the same business as AAPL within 30 days and take a loss, those losses may not be deductible under the wash rule. Sorry I know I'm inundating you with shit but its really surprising the amount of people that don't know that rule and swing trade

Buy 20 shares of C for 600

That 50 dollar loss is usually deductible from your gains. However if you buy substantially the "same industry" you can lose a loss deduction. >> No.21247727

>>21247124
No. Generally the wash rule applies only to the individual security, though there's some issues with preferred versus common stocks. That other guy is getting confused with the substantially similar rule, which just states you can't buy a security that's basically the same as what you sold.
So yes, if you bought and sold Ford at a loss and bought Chevy instead, it's not considered a wash sale. On the other hand, if you bought Ford and sold for a loss, then bought Ford again within 30 days then that's a wash sale and you can't claim that loss on your taxes. Alternatively, if you sold Ford at a loss and bought Ford preferred stocks instead or if Ford reorganized under another ticker despite basically being the same company and you bought those stocks, then that'd be a wash sale. That's what that ot
Basically, as long as it's not fundamentally the same corporation, you can buy any stock you want after selling for a loss.
Actually, the very idea is kinda ridiculous, as at that point you would literally be locked out of entire market sectors for up to 60 days anytime you sold at a loss. Imagine selling at a loss on a tech stock and being told you couldn't buy literally anything else in tech for 30 days. Ridiculous.
